Automated Backups
How do we verify whether the automated backups are appending the tape and not
over writing the backups done during the previous days?

The depends of course on the backup utility you use. For fbackup for instance
you could write a script that reads the header of the tape (frecover -V
filename) and check the contents of the fields in "filename".
