Automount: cd /net/IX-iaa hang sometimes for 15 seconds

Hi all,

We have a problem with the command "cd /net/IX-iaa". It sometimes needs 15 seconds for the return to the command prompt. The directory /net is a automounted (AUTOFS) filesystem and IX-iaa is the name of the Serviceguard Package. It´s a HP rx4640 host running HP-UX 11.23. Automount daemon tracing is activated with "-v -T" and kill -17. Looking at the tracefile /var/adm/automount.log you can see, that the 15 second hang occurs every time between "pingnfs OK: nfs version=3" and "do_mapent_hosts: host IX-iaa OK". Does everybody know where the 15 seconds delay come from ?

Thanks in advance,

Rudolf Fischer

I've heard that using automounting /net/ is a no no. It mounts all exported filesystems, even if you only want one. It is better to have a map for each filesystem.

perhaps dns resolution ?
if you do a ping IX-iaa , is it slow also to respond ?
If yes, if you try with IP address and time is OK, it's DNS resolution ..

If not ..

Thanks Dennis for your interesting reply. We will consider that for the future. From other hosts the same command is working without any problem. There must be an other solution for that.

No, "ping IX-iaa" is not slow to respond. We also think about DNS resolution, P R. and we configured DNS caching for this server without success. The issue was the same.
