AutoRAID

With an AutoRAID installed in my K series should I see multiple LUN's. For instance in SAM I see one "HP AutoRAID Disk Array Controller" and 4 separate "HP AutoRAID LUN" listed. Is this normal? Is this because I have multiples LUNs? Is a new volume group created for AutoRAID or do people just assign disks from the AutoRAID to existing groups on an as needed basis. Is this is the case then why bother with the whole RAID thing since RAID is supposed to make it so you don't have to do this.

Re: AutoRAID

When you have multiple LUNs created on the autoraid , you will see them through SAM. Its supposed to work that way.
However just creating LUNs is not enough . You need to assign the LUNs to volume groups just as you would assign physical disks . then you need to create logical volumes out of the volume groups and then assign filesystems to them.

I suggest you read the documentation supplied for your AutoRaid .
Hope this helps.

Re: AutoRAID

Don't have the original docs and I've read what I can find on HP's site already.

Re: AutoRAID

Sam,

Just making sure that you looked through all the documentation located at the following URL.

http://www.hp.com/cposupport/manindex/hpsurestor19162_eng_man.html

Hopefully this contains more info than you were able to find earlier. If not, sorry.

Good Luck,

Re: AutoRAID

Sam, Everything you are seeing about the AutoRaid is normal. The Autoraid is a storage subsystem that was intended to relieve administrators of the tasks of "grouping" disks to create raid sets. The Autoraid is "suppose" to automatically move data to/from Raid 5 to/from Raid 0/1 according to how data is accessed - this is how it got it's name "Auto" raid. If you want, you can create one huge LUN, or a few LUN's. Either way - each LUN will be protected "Auto"matically via the AutoRaid. You still have to create VG's, LV's, etc. as with any other LUN - the difference here is that these LUN's are RAID protected. You will most likely find that the price of this "auto" stuff is in performance. The AutoRaids are Slugs, but they are essentially bullet proof.
If you can focus your eyes far and straight enough ahead of yourself, you can see the back of your head.
