Backup Data Encryption
Hi Guys
Does anyone know of a backup product that will do
data encryption. We need this kind of protection for our off-site tapes.

Re: Backup Data Encryption
Data Protector allows for customized encryption. /opt/omni/lib/libde.sl is the standard location the DP uses for backups when the encryption option is selected for backup. Just create your own module and put it into place. A word of caution in that DP updates will overwrite that file with the default.

Eric

Re: Backup Data Encryption
Data Protector is a good option and one that I use; however, what you are trying to do is also possible with the tools that you already have: fbackup/frecover, tar, and cpio + crypt + dd. You can also use one of the more powerful encryption tools if you like.
Here's an example using cpio to backup /usr and /etc:
find /usr /etc -print | cpio -ocv | crypt "TopSecret" | dd ibs=512 obs=256k of=/dev/rmt/0m
To verify the backup, we do essentially the reverse:
dd ibs=256k obs=512 | crypt "TopSecret" | cpio -icvt
Here's an example using cpio to backup /usr and /etc:
find /usr /etc -print | cpio -ocv | crypt "TopSecret" | dd ibs=512 obs=256k of=/dev/rmt/0m
To verify the backup, we do essentially the reverse:
dd ibs=256k obs=512 | crypt "TopSecret" | cpio -icvt
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Backup Data Encryption
Hi David,
GNU Privacy Guard (GnuPG) will accomplish this, and best of all, it's free. GnuPG comes with HP-UX Internet Express, available here:

Other binaries might exist. You can download the source from:
