Backup Strategy for Superdome Itanium

Hi guys,

Recently we bought a HP Superdome Integrity server. It has HPUX 11.23i installed. Currently, we don't know what the right backup strategy to use. What backup software to implement and use. We are hoping to use OVDP 5.1 but its not yet supported by 11.23. Any suggestions guys?...

Thanks..
Allan

DP5.1 *is* supported on HPUX11.23 - you just need to run the cell manager on another server (maybe a windows system?). Here's the support matrix:

Re: Backup Strategy for Superdome Itanium

DP is a good backup tool. As to the actual strategy for backups, alot of this will depend on how many nodes (partitions) you have, what databases you have, backup windows you can work with, etc...

Re: Backup Strategy for Superdome Itanium

Backup early, backup often. Just like the way we voted in Chicago.

Few general issues.

You need to back up the OS configuration for disater recovery and such. make_tape_recovery must be run regularly to create bootable tapes. You should not include data in the backup because Ingite won't get good database copies unless the database is down.

Then you can go with your tool of choice for data, DP 5.1 for oracle and application data, fbackup for cold stuff that isn't online. Lots of choices there.

This data backup we do a full backu once a week and incrementals on changed files once a day after that.

Re: Backup Strategy for Superdome Itanium

Your choices are HP OVDP, Veritas NetBackup, CA BrightStor, TSM and Legato Networker. The choice is yours - if you've already got in-house expertise with one of the above mentioned go for it. Most if not all of the above mentioned backup software will work with practically any HW/SW environment.

Re: Backup Strategy for Superdome Itanium

Hello Allan,

what are you trying to backup ?

- Database
- Storage (how much)
- How many partitions ?

With the upcoming Data Protector 5.5 release, HP also supports the Cell Manager under 11.23i for Itanium2 Server.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
