backup takes unusually too long.
Hi,
I am backing up my Oracle DB (124GB) and backup is done offline. I am using a SAP tool called (brbackup) to backup the DB. The utility called by SAP is dd command. No compression was enabled on the SAP/Oracle side when doing the backup. However, the backup takes too long (almost 14 hours!).
As an additional info, when making an ignite-backup containing vg00 and vg01 but excluding the database, the backup takes more than 5 hours to complete. Total size of the backup is less than 80 GB.
Is there a parameter I should tweak or a command line flag I could use to make my backup time faster? I'm using SCSI DAT160 drives attached directly to my rx3600 via dual-channel u320 scsi adapter.
Hope you can help. Thanks,
ROMMEL

Re: backup takes unusually too long.
What was the "normal" backup window before it started taking 14 hours?
- for the Oracle backup and also the Ignite
Is the Oracle data on the same drives as your OS?
When do you backup?
What else is running at that time?
Has anything changed recently? (data structure, hardware, firmware, patching...anything on your sytem)
Are there any errors / warnings on your drives?
Have you checked your syslogs on the server for any issues?
Have you looked at your overall system performace for clues? Disk I/O, Memory, CPU, etc. etc

The Devil is in the detail.

Re: backup takes unusually too long.
Please see my responses:

> There was no normal backup time. That's the same backup time ever since.
Is the Oracle data on the same drives as your OS?
> Yes.
When do you backup?
> After office hours, no users logged in and the application is down.
What else is running at that time?
> None. Just the OS. SAP was shut down before backup for both the data and Ignite.

> No software and firmware upgrades were done.
Are there any errors / warnings on your drives?
> None.
Have you checked your syslogs on the server for any issues?
> Yes. No errors were found on the syslogs.
Have you looked at your overall system performace for clues? Disk I/O, Memory, CPU, etc. etc
> Yes. Performance of the components were monitored and there were no performance bottlenecks.
