Bad Block Relocation on swap, /stand and /

I have HP-UX 11.00 on disk in mirror.
Should option Bad Block Relocation be switched on for logical volumes swap, /stand and / ?

They should all be set to OFF. All ours are as they are on local disks. If your VG00 is on something like XP or EMC then bad block relocation should be set to NONE.

Re: Bad Block Relocation on swap, /stand and /

By default LVM reserves special alternate storage space at the end of the disk for handling bad block errors. This can prevent a fatal error if a write fails by providing an alternate block to complete the operation. If, however, your disk controllers already support automatic bad block relocation (also called hardware sparing) then you may want to consider electing not to use LVM's bad block relocation mechanism.
Bad block relocation should also be turned off for contigous logical volumes, including root, primary swap, and dump.
Bad block relocation for LVM disks is not supported if you are using the HP-IB (on old systems) interface type.

The only time this is an issue is with disk arrays. If disk array then see if the disk array takes care of bad block, like EMC does.

Otherwise, accept the defaults.

Re: Bad Block Relocation on swap, /stand and /

Since all "modern" disk drives that are used nowadays support their own sparing, I personally tend to recommend turning off LVM relocation completely (-r N). In some cases trouble-shooting and maintenance is easier without it.

Even the 50MB drives I used with my AtariST had their own sparing. :-)
