Best way to Update a NEW install??
There are too many if's and maybee's that would lead you down the NEW INSTALL trail.
If you completed a NEW install (hpux 11.0), what options are available to update the OS
w/patches & products from production??
All advise is appreciated,
manny

Re: Best way to Update a NEW install??
I disagree. In point of fact, an Ignite recovery (make_tape_recovery) tape from which you recover your operating system AND current patch state along with sound, current backups (and strategies for using them) *is* designed to get you back to the most similar, complete configuration you had.
Can you please be more explicit as to what you do not see in this approach that you find bothersome?

Re: Best way to Update a NEW install??
I have used tape_recovery to save me from an internal drive familiar before...everyone should be running these
at least once a month (recommend weekly).
Our remote Disaster site has an hp box w/attached EMC, but the hardware configuration is NOT the same.
I know that I could install the OS regardless of the hardware configuration.
My concern is how to update the box from the products and patches standpoint??
I could rebuild the LVM (via scripts), and perform restores for the apps...
Thanks,
manny

Re: Best way to Update a NEW install??
As a part of an Ignite recovery of vg00 you would be recovering your IPD (Installed Products Database) described in /var/adm/sw/ so products and patches *would* be restored.
Insofar as igniting a dissimilar disk configuration, this is what is expected in remote disaster recovery. My preference is to construct basic scripts that compose skeletal volume groups and logical volumes ahread of time.
Ignite recovery will succeed nicely for vg00 but fail for non-vg00 volume groups due to different/missing device specifications in the vg map files placed on the Ignite tape by 'make_tape_recovery' in these cases. You can easily review the installation by examining '/var/opt/ignite/local/install.log'.
