maybe the card where your monitor is connected to is not configured as the console.
Try to use a character prompt when you have the xlogin (i don't remember exactly the label, but there is a button on the bottom part of xlogin screen wich should take you to the alphanumeric login prompt).
Another try is to connnect to the system and exec the command who to see on which terminal you are connected, there should be a user connected to console.
Last try is to do something like
echo TEST > /dev/console, this should write something back your X display if you are using the console port.
If nothing is working maybe you are using a port not configured as console.
Question now is, do u have more then one graphic card on your ws?
If yes try connecting the monitor to the other card.
Last hope is to try to connect a alphanumeric terminal to the serial and see if you get the console.
When you find the console at boot you can change it with command
path console graphic_1 or command like that
