Book reviews on "HP-UX 11i System Administration"?

Hello,

in the accompanying carton (that included manifest, licenses, tapes, CDs etc.) of our new Keystones I found a flyer advertising Marty Poniatowski's new rerelease of "HP-UX 11i System Administration" at a special 20% discount.

Visiting the mentioned URL I haven't found any such discount references though (maybe the flyer was dated).

Although I could have lots of documentation in digital form on the notoroius "HP instant information" CDROMs, or in the web, I still fancy buying me such a reference manual (being materialistic I like the smell of paper).

Has anyone of you fellow admins come accross this title, and could possibly recommend or reject it?

Regards
Ralph

HP published book (in my opinion) is worth buying. I've got one on "Performance & Tuning" ad for this book that you mentioned I intended to purchase it too. Take a look at Amazon review ..

Re: Book reviews on "HP-UX 11i System Administration"?

Hi Ralph,

Marty's not bad - he can be hot or cold depending on the topic.
For instance in his 11.x Sys Admin book he did a good job on LVM (mirroring/striping in particular) but on other subjects he generally lacked detail.
His stuff is pretty commonly on the shelf at most large bookstores. I'd recommend you look it or some of his earlier work over before plunking down the $.
I haven't seen his 11i book so I won't comment specifically on it.
And I do agree w/Harry - you at the best class available already.

Rgds,
Jeff

I purchased and read this book. Not highly recommended especially at $50.00+. It's a little too detailed in some areas and weak in others. I also find his writing style a little ... boring.

Sorry Marty; just being honest.

Hi,

well, do not forget the "soon to be published" (i.e. this very millenium) written by our beloved royal Bill Hassel!

Just my $0.02,

Re: Book reviews on "HP-UX 11i System Administration"?

Hello,

if I was to recommend any of the Marty's HP-UX Admin Books, I would choose his newest work:
http://vig.prenhall.com/catalog/academic/product/0,4096,0131018833,00.html

But why does nobody recommmends Rafeeq Ur Rehmans Book, which is written a lot denser:
http://vig.prenhall.com/catalog/academic/product/0,4096,0130183741,00.html
A new edition will be available spring 2004:

Re: Book reviews on "HP-UX 11i System Administration"?

great!! I got this book recently during my trip to Atlanta. I like this book. But this book is not for advanced Hp-UX admins. Those who are from other unix flavours will definitely benefit from this book. I really like the sections on vPars and nPars. There are many good points about this book.

1. There are some advanced Hp-UX features covered in this book. First time! 10 points.

2. This book is definitely a good book for new Hp-UX admins. I give 10 points for this.

3. The cram card is really nice. this covers rp74XX and rp84XX PDC and other commands. I give 9 points for this feature.

4. Understanding this book very easy. I took this book and read the first and second chapters without any break. Interesting!. I will give 8 points for wrting style. really good.

5. I dont like the CDROMs, except some scripts in TECHTIPS directory. I will give 5 points for the CDROM feature.

Re: Book reviews on "HP-UX 11i System Administration"?

I forgot one thing. the book is little bit costly. but i think it is worth for new Hp-UX admins, not for experience HP-UX admins...
