boot from tape, ignite
hello
i have an rp3440 server with a DAT72 tape external drive connected to it, the tape is detected by the OS and claimed.
i have an old ignite, i have taken this ignite from the same server, i want to restore this archive to the server. in the boot menu
when i do SEA, the tape is not detected. i used the same tape to restore a lot of images before, even with the same server.
any clue?

Re: boot from tape, ignite
Is the tape drive plugged to the server's integrated SCSI connector, or do you have an extra adapter card for the tape drive?
If the tape drive is connected through an adapter card, what is the card model and server firmware level? Perhaps the current firmware level does not support booting from that particular adapter model.
The integrated SCSI connectors of the server should always support booting, but when using adapter cards, you need to check the firmware levels.
According to an old firmware matrix document (dated July 2007) I happen to have available, adapter models J3526A, AB287A, A5506B and A5230A have a note saying "Adapter not supported in boot path for this server" for the rp34xx servers. But this is old information, and newer firmware releases may have improved the situation for those adapters.

Which old thread? Do you have a title and some text or just the threadId?

OK, so has anything changed at all? Do you move the tape drive around, use the same cable, etc?
If the drive is always attached, have you tried powering cycling it and then running a search?
Is it possible to move the tape drive to another server and check to see if works elsewhere?

Re: boot from tape, ignite
Here is the link you may have been looking for:
http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/Ignite-UX/Tape-not-Detect-On-RP4440/m-p/5115180
The problem here appears to be related to trying to attach the tape to a Smart Array card, which will not work of course.
Is there an SA card installed in this system (not sure what options the rp3400 has in regards to Smart Array)?

Re: boot from tape, ignite
The BCH BO command will accept a hardware path as an argument. Have you tried giving the hardware path of the tape drive to the BO command and attempted to boot from it?
Failing that have you attempted dual or two-step media recovery? You need a bootable CD/DVD created using the same version of Ignite-UX that was used to create the tape to boot from to do that.
