Boot problem

One of our hosts has crashed and doesn't boot anymore. A message indicates that the root entry is missing on /etc/passwd. We've tried to go to single user (reboot -> bo pri > hpux -is boot) but it keeps showing the message and does not show the shell prompt. We also tried to boot from CD, with current and previous vmunix, and use the recovery shell to fix it. During this processes, when we try do a chroot_lvm, a message saying that /stand/rootconf is corrupted comes up.

Is there any other way to fix this ?

Thanks.

Re: Boot problem

Do you have ignite recovery tape prepared for this server?

You can do selective restore of passwd file.

But how you would boot either in single/multiuser mode?

Re: Boot problem

You could boot from the (11.0) 'install/update/recovery' CD or the (11i) 'core os install and recovery' and recover/repair from that.

Re: Boot problem

Try booting in lvm maintenance mode as this uses a basic/default root login and shell;

hpux -lq

Then you can try to activate vg00, mount / and then fix the passwd file.

Re: Boot problem

T G

Now we have our "/stand" mounted and our problem is that rootconf is empty...
We have a recent copy of this file restored in other host.

We're using a recovery shell from a CD boot. Commands like tar or cpio are not available, the Cd-ROM drive cannot be used and network interfaces are down. It's a silly question but how do I copy this file to its original location ?

As described in the document, how do "restore the /stand/rootconf from backup tape provided there's one using ..." ?

thanks

Re: Boot problem

Thank you all for your help. After reading your messages we've been able to bring our system back.

As information, our problem was caused by disk errors, which basically corrupted a lot of OS areas/files. We've been unable to bring the system back using the "usual" recovery procedures, such as booting with single user or maintenance mode, or using the recovery process on Support CD. After following the procedure suggested by T G Manikandan, we finnally brought it back on single user mode and fixed the disk problems using the Support CD.

thanks again,
Eduardo Marques.
