Booting 700 series from 800 series over network?

Hi y'all,

I have a 715 workstation in which the disk has failed. I need to get info from the disk (yup, no backup, slap wrist, should know better!) but its only booting every so often (and even then kicking up the mother and father of all rackets!!).

I was hoping maybe to boot the machine from an 800 series, and try to copy stuff from the disk then. Bit of a long shot but... Any other better suggestions most welcome too of course, I realise I could be sunk altogether and the stuff on the disk gone never to be seen again but it would VERY cool if I could salvage it.

thanks in advance,
Kevin.

Kevin,

another possibility is to take the disk out, readdress the SCSI ID and put it into (as an additional disk) into another workstation, then mount the volumes, but it sounds as if your disk is dying.

Even if you can bootup your machine from another source (LAN or recoveryCD) you would not be able to salvage anything from a disk that has already dead. I'm assuming the data you wanted is on the "failed" disk. If you got a 2 disks situation (1 = bootable; 1 = data) and the dead disk is bootable disk and there would be still hope to get the data of the "data" disk by mounting that disk onto another system.
