Booting from disk (right after Ignite recovery) fails

Hello everyone,

We have just made a recovery tape from system A. When we try to recover in a new machine B, the recovery succeeds, but when the system reboots trying to boot from the disk, it fails.

When we boot from the disk, it seems like the system will not read the disk. We have opened the machine and pull out the SCSI internal cables that go from the internal disks to the internal interface of a two AB290 cards and the result is exactly the same: hangs up during boot at this point:

-------------------------------------------
ISL Revision A.00.43 Apr 12, 2000

ISL booting hpux

Boot
: disk(1/0/1/1/0/4/1.6.0.0.0.0.0;0)/stand/vmunix
11788288 + 2461696 + 22338128 start 0x1f7568
g
-------------------------------------------

It hangs on the "g"...

No hardware problem should be involved as we have recovered in system B from a recovery tape we made in system C and the system comes up nice and clean.

No problems with tape should be involved as we have used the recovery tape from system A to recover system D succesfully.

We thought it could be a problem with the scsiU320 driver which the AB290 needs so we changed this cards for a common scsi160 but still we get the same problem. We also recovered from the tape on system D, installed the drivers and try to recover on system B, but again the same.

System B information:
rp7440 with two cells, two IO chassis, PA8900 processors.

System D is a SD partition.

On the console logs I get the following warnings when booting:
PAT_DATA_FIELD_WARNING
PAT_ENCODED_FIELD_WARNING

Any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks very much in advance!

Alejandro

What version of HPUX are you trying to load onto your rp7440, it will only take 11.11.

Yes, of course all the systems I'm talking about have installed 11iv1.

Currently I'm trying to install HWEnable patch bundle on the intermediate machine (system D) in order to make an ignite-tape from that intermediate system and see if I can recover that one in system B and boot...

Thanks for the reply!

When making the tape did you use make_tape_recovery or make_sys_image. Make_sys_image will create a better image for recovery on a different system, as it will leave the certain things undefined until initial boot. This is imperative if you are going from on type of server to another.

Re: Booting from disk (right after Ignite recovery) fails

I used make_tape_recovery.

I'll take into account that information for the future, but as I commented (and we have done that several times) this should work without problems... ¿? With that same tape we could bring up the system in a SD partition, and with a tape from a rp3440 we have recovered succesfully the rp3440-system in our rp7440...

I would add that system A is a rp7620.

Thanks once again!

Hi Alejondro,

If I am wrong then I am relay sorry....I am little bit confuse Ur entire question, could U please explain how many systems Ur working now (I mean ignite recovery).....because U know rp3440 & rp7440 are not same H/W architecture, If U try to ignite recovery tape one system to another system some time it will recovery successfully but when U reboot Ur system that time we can not boot because Ur physical system H/W path is miss match. HP all ways recommended same mode HP box U can take ignite back & restore.

Thanks--Yaqub
