bootp

Hi,

How can I know whether a particular server is a bootp server?

I would like to comment out the service in /etc/inetd.conf without effecting anything else.

Re: bootp

Have you any entries in /etc/bootptab and/or /etc/dhcptab that are required?

Do you use bootp for Ignite purposes?

If not, then you should be able to comment it out and restart inetd.

If you find out you need it, uncomment it and restart inetd again.

Re: bootp

Hi

Generally bootpd is used for DHCP and is used by Ignite-UX when booting/recovering a client over the network. The other common use is for booting printers.

If you are not using DHCP or the system is not an Ignite-UX Server then it is probably safe to comment out bootpd in /etc/inetd.conf and then run inetd -c.

As Tim said, if you find you need it, you can always enable it again.

Re: bootp

On the server in question.

ps -ef | grep -i boot

if you see the process, its probably a server.

You could try booting a box off of it.

Interupt at the 10 second prompt

boot lan.ip_of_server install

This can be aborted prior to destorying the local disk.

That test must happen on the built in lan card, no exceptions.

The prior posts provide a good base, if you provide some more information.

Re: bootp

Well somewhat related.

Ever since I installed the latest jetDirect i'm getting the following messaages in my syslog.log ... and frequently

Aug 21 09:25:58 sux10 bootpd[5550]: reading "/etc/dhcptab"
Aug 21 09:25:58 sux10 bootpd[5550]: group count: 0
Aug 21 09:25:58 sux10 bootpd[5550]: reading "/etc/bootptab"
Aug 21 09:25:58 sux10 bootpd[5550]: read 1 entries from "/etc/bootptab"
Aug 22 06:29:30 sux10 bootpd[5550]: Exiting after 500 minutes of inactivity
Aug 22 09:26:13 sux10 bootpd[7391]: bootpd 2.4 #1.17.112.7: Wed Apr 14 05:09:15
GMT 1999

In fact same happens on installing this jetDirect on any number of machines.

Any ideas?

Apart from that there've been changes in the way jetdirect works now. I sthere some document for printers configuration?

Thanks and Regards,
