Brand New HP Box - Problems Implementing

Hi All,

We just got a brand new R390 HP-UX 11.0 server
and we are having tons of problems.

We had to reload the OS. My question to the
group is what is the proper procedure to
install a new box?

We need drivers for our MUX and lan card, yet
we can't FTP anything to the box yet.

We need to install products and batch bundles.

Does anyone have a nice setup on this? What's
the best way to get drivers for our network?

We have all the product CD's and the patch
bundle CD for March 2001, it's just a matter
of getting some procedures in place. What's
the best order for installing via SAM?

This is my first new box.
TIA,
Laurie

Re: Brand New HP Box - Problems Implementing

Hi Laurie:

As I'm sure you know there is no correct answer to this problem but I typically do something like this for a cold install:

1) Install CORE OS
2) Install latest HWCR bundle
3) Install HP applications from latest Application Software CD set; Add codewords fro all products on Disk 1; mark; install - then do the same for the remainder of the CD set
4) Install latest GR release
5) Configure LAN interfaces; set up DNS/NIS/NTP
6) If using Mirror/UX mirror vg00
7) Configure any remaining volume groups
8) Set up NFS / auto-mounter
9) Set up printers; install JetAdmin
10) Copy over user directories, passwd, group, etc.
11) Install User Application Software including Database Software
12) Install Ignite/UX and make a recovery tape
13) Add node to Omniback or other backup

I don't claim this to be an exhaustive list but it's fairly close.

My 2 cents worth, Clay.

Laurie, the good news is that it does get easier each time.

If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Laurie,

I should add that the drivers are on the Applications CD's. Install them first, followed by the General Release patchset to get the latest fixes.

Re: Brand New HP Box - Problems Implementing

Clay has given you probably the best installation route. One thing to be aware of is that some LAN and MUX cards require software which are located on the application CD's normally number 1 so you need to make sure that you have all the relevent codewords. Also their is some software on the application CD's like Ignite, which are always usefull to put on. Also don't forget the Diagnostic bundle found on the Support CD.

Re: Brand New HP Box - Problems Implementing

I noticed that you have the LAN interface in
step 5, but during the core OS install it asks
to configure LAN interface.

Should we re-install OS with NO NETWORKING ?

Thank you for your help...

Re: Brand New HP Box - Problems Implementing

Hi Laurie:

I follow the same steps (essentially) as Clay outlined. You *DO* want to install networking software!

At "step-5" I use SAM to configure LAN cards. Insofar as DNS, etc. is concerned, I do *NOT* let /sbin/set_parms configure it. Rather, I manually configure my /etc/nssswitch.conf & /etc/resolv.conf after I have a basic functional network.
