I wanted to know why in my btmp file i have some bad logins from an ip address and some with the written name. I just wanted to know the difference as to why this occurs. Thanks for your help.

Keith,
down to your /etc/hosts and /etc/nsswitch.conf.
If the ip is in /etc/hosts it will be resolved to the hostname, otherwise it is the ip-address.
