Re: Bunnies for Porting Centre help
Bill: How could it possible Utah have apps higher level than UK??!!
Utah is the mirror of UK. In theory They should be identical or UK have apps higher level than Utah till Utah gets updated over night.
Kel : who did you send the email to at the UK site? Would you let me know please.
We are in the UK are aware of the problem, and we are trying our best with the help from HP to resolve the problem. This may take some time, But hopefully it will be fixed.
Cheers
Mehdi

Oops, guess I got that the wrong way 'round then!
So what is the French site mirroring?

Re: Bunnies for Porting Centre help
I seem to have sparked a bit of a conversation.
Mehdi- I used the generic email off the site hpux@connect.org.uk, haven't received a response yet.
updated points on the way.
Thanks,
Kel

Re: Bunnies for Porting Centre help
As I explain above, some of these sites have hardware problem, or even they may not have any more disk space for the over night update.
Our first priority is to get one of the US site ( most probably Utah) up and runing for the US users. And next we need to make a decision in regard to the other mirror sites.
I hope that has cleared some of the questions.

Re: Bunnies for Porting Centre help
I never really gave it the thought that the HP-UX Porting Centre was an official HP sponsored site.
That being the case (if my assumption is correct) and knowing that HP is trying to cut costs everywhere, it sounds as though they are losing interest in supporting the Porting Centre, in which case, shouldn't the Wisconsin mirror simply be shut down and removed rather than run over a year as a downed site.
Or should there be an outcry from it's customers to bring them all back on line to hp, if so, who (specifically) should the outcry be directed at?
If HP is not an official sponsor, then who's resposibility is it to keep the porting centres on line?
Did HP do a one-time donation of equipment and cut it loose from there or are they under that assumption?
I do not know the answers to these questions.
So, my only reason for posing them is not to assign fault, but to get everyone one the same page HP, us and the Porting Centres.
It is starting to sound to me as though the Porting Centre might not be around in the future if someone doesn't do something.
That would be a shame.
Thanks,
Kel

Kel: There is no such things. HP still has strong interest on Porting Centres and I don't think they lose their interest that easy.
Thanks

Re: Bunnies for Porting Centre help
I don't understand your answer "There are no such things."
It sounds more like my second thoughts are more correct than my first. HP donated the equipment, the mirrors administrate and maintain their respective mirror.
Certainly there is value add on both sides. Depending on the country there might be mutual tax benefits. I'm sure many HP emplyees and service centers depend on and enjoy the mirrors, as do many of us as external customers. So there is a definate value add there.
Unfortunately, my questions haven't been answered. The Porting Centre's regardless of which mirror, are a service and it doesn't look good when any of them are down for over a year. Maybe that should be taken up with Wisconsin, I don't know but as a customer it's frustrating and in a business world sense I probably shouldn't care why. That's the nice thing about a forum such as this, you do get to care.
The upside is there are sympathetic ears here that want to have good sites to get files from.
Problem is, we have no idea what to do to assist.
Utah site may not be a big deal at this point but something should be done about Wisconsin because it is tarnishing a good thing. Plus these are symptoms that should be dealt with before all is lost.
Any suggestions on resolutions? For bunnies?

Re: Bunnies for Porting Centre help
Here's the response from David Wilson:
"The machine failed and HP has not supplied us with another. Possibly because we are now a Sun shop and no longer have any HP machines of our own. It's up to HP to either give us another machine for the archive or find another mirror site."
It sounds to me like we can erase Wisconsin from our bookmarks.

Re: Bunnies for Porting Centre help
Too funny. Had to give bunnies for the humor.
I wonder if they want a little whine with their cheese?
While HP's at it, Can I have a free superdome for my home?
I can use it for heat when not in use as my server. ;)

Re: Bunnies for Porting Centre help
With a free superdome from HP, (and T1) I would be willing to admin a mirror from my house. While using the spare CPU cycles for other tasks/ projects.

Re: Bunnies for Porting Centre help
From Mehdi's description, this would be upgrading their technology and storage by about 3-4 years, a real shot in the arm.
This is a little like the prize-winning suggestion somebody once made about what to do with all the FREE AOL CDs that have been piling up since the dawn of the internet... "collect 3.6 solar masses and implode the sun". It has a lot of potential, but breaks down upon closer inspection.
I was pretty sure my idea was in line with the machines HP had running the ITRC web site, but Dan assures me that they've upgraded to C200s and C240s. Progress, I guess.
(Sorry Dan, cheap shot, I know. Consider it just another of my various answers to the HP survey which all go "Great Site, but waaay underpowered for the amount of traffic that it generates as a result of its excellence").
So, that's my story, and I'm sticking to it.
Later all... --bmr
