Can a HP-UX server broadcast NTP to a Windows system?

Can a HP-UX server broadcast NTP to a Windows system?

I have setup my HP-UX ntp daemon to broadcast NTP version 1 on IP 224.0.1.1 (I also tried version 3 with no luck)
When I enter "net time" on my PC is says it can not locate a time server. We are all on the save class 'A' network.

Is there any reason this should not work?

I don't know of any restriction. A broadcast is just that - the message is sent out to whoever wants to receive it. The issue is with the receiver - in this case the Windows machine and it's configuration.

It reminds me of the saying:

224.0.1.1 is a multicast address. Not all NICs are multicast capable and probably net time doesn't even listen for a multicast. Generally it works better if you point net time at the ntp server you want it to use.

Re: Can a HP-UX server broadcast NTP to a Windows system?

The goal was to not have to script the host name of the NTP server anywhere. It seemed that the broadcast method was the best way to do this.
Does anyone know what specifically the "net time" command on Windows looks for? & how my HP-UX 11.0 system can work with it? Or am I doomed to coding the NTP server name specifically into a command file on my windows systems?

Understand you can use Timesync on NT to get ntp from a broadcast.

Seems like it would be easier to use the PDC to get the time from the UNIX machine and have everyone else just get their time from the PDC. That way I think you would not have to use the hostname of the server except on the PDC.

This ntp client is free, works on NT with any time source.

Further, Dr. Mill's program will allow the NT box to broadcast time itself in a standard way as opposed to the way Microsoft does it.

Re: Can a HP-UX server broadcast NTP to a Windows system?

My HP-UX box is running NTP. It gets it's time from the web (an HP time server).

Then, all my PCs get their time from my HP box.

The Win PCs run a freebee program called Achron. You can configure it lots of ways but I have the PC set the time once on boot-up and that's it.

Actually I had a thread in this forum when I set up my NTP server on HP-UX. Search for it.

Re: Can a HP-UX server broadcast NTP to a Windows system?

The problem you have is in thinking that Microsoft interfaces with other systems ;)

net time does not have anything to do with NTP. This may be changed in XP, but I have not tested it. net time only talks to a Microsoft server.

3rd party applications will allow NT to connect to a realn NTP server and sync. There was in version 3.5 of NT a NTP client, but it was removed in 4.0->2K, and restricted to other MS products.

Re: Can a HP-UX server broadcast NTP to a Windows system?

We have two NTP servers that sync to ntp
servers on the internet. They in turn sync our
other HP boxes and one is also a brodcast server for our home office network. To sync
"selected" pc in that network we use a item called Tardis/K9 depending on your needs.
Link is http://www.kaska.demon.co.uk/ . On my PC I'm running W2K and it simply has a small
service which does the sync'ing.
