Can a PC use NIS database to resolve host names???
Hi,
We have an NIS server (running HP-UX 10.20) in our lab.
The same is configured as DNS server also just only for the PCs to resolve the
host names.
We prefer NIS for host name resolution for the UNIX servers as it is much
faster.
Now, whenever we add a new server to the network, I have to update two
databases, one NIS & the other DNS.
The PCs are currenlty configured to contact DNS server for host name
resolution. If someone can suggest me a way out to make a PC search NIS
database for host name resolution it will be of great help as I need to
maintain only a single database.(NIS)
Thanks in advance
Sajith

Re: Can a PC use NIS database to resolve host names???
Hi,
The server that the workstations are using us where you make the change. The
thing to verify is the search order of the server.
Type the following:
nslookup
policy (this will tell the search order i.e. DNS, NIS, files.)
If this is not the sequence you want edit the /etc/nsswitch.conf
