Re: can hp server do ntp with one sun server?

Yes.

HP-UX can get time off any standard time source. Sun Solaris and other flavors of Unix from that firm meet the standard.

Here are some docs on how to set this up.

Hi Gary,
Yes, this is very much possible. HEre is a useful link http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/ntp.html

Re: can hp server do ntp with one sun server?

Yes - the only real difference is that you don't have SAM to help you configure the Sun system.

Do you know how to make the HP server a NTP server? I am assuming that you've already done so via SAM. If not, please reply. The only real decision you need to make is whether you'll allow NTP broadcasting or not (network guys clamp down on UDP traffic.) For this example, assume your server's IP address is 10.10.200.200.

On the Sun side, you'll need to confirm that the software is installed, preferably the xntpd version. Login as root:

# cd /etc/rc2.d
# ls *xntp*
S99xntpd
# cd /etc/inet/
# cp ntp.client ntp.conf

***
IF you have setup NTP multicast broadcast, skip to "start it up". The following is for direct connect for ntp services. Works in almost all cases - talk to network admin if it does not work.
***

# vi /etc/inet/ntp.conf
(remove the multicast line and insert the following)

server 10.10.200.200
driftfile /etc/ntp.drift
requestkey 65535
controlkey 65534
restrict default noserve
#
# the next item is all one line
#
restrict 10.10.200.200 nomodify noquery notrap nopeer

### End of editing

***
Start it up (on the sun box)
***
# /etc/rc2.d/S99xntpd start

***
Wait for sync - 5 minutes.
Then Test it !
***

# ntpq -p
remote refid st t when poll reach delay offset disp
==============================================================================
*10.10.200.200 time.nist.gov 2 u 680 1024 377 0.78 0.076 1.04

***
Note that asterisk (*) next to your HP's IP address? That means the Sun server has been synchronized to your HP box! If you test before 5 minutes is up, then you will see polling information only, not any sync status. See the "time.nist.gov"? That's the parent time server in my example. If I ran "ntpq -p 10.10.200.200" I should have an asterisk next to "time.nist.gov". Again, this is only an example. I don't know anything about your configuration.

Good luck!
