Can I take ignite backup on SAN attached Tape Library

Hi,

I have two rx4640 servers running Oracle 10G with RAC and MC service guard. Now ths system is installed completly and working fine.

So i am planning to take the ignite backup of the servers . but there is no tape drive directly attached to these servers. But the servers are connected to STK L40 tape library via SAN switch ( EMC DS16B3 switch )

Can I use the STK L40 tape drives for taking ignite backup.

Expecting Your Reply,
Thanks in Advance,
Regards,
Praveen

As far as I know, you will be able to take ignite tape archive on SAN connected tape, but would not be able to recover from SAN connected tape.

You can prepare network archive instead. man make_net_recovery for details.

Hi,
you can perfectly do this.
Be sure that the service of your backup software are stopped so that they don't lock your tape drive.

To restore the ignite tape you need a drive with a SCSI connection

Hi,

Thanks for your information.

That means, while restoring I need to attach a direct SCSI tape, and from that I can restore.

That means, for restore , SAN attached tape library won't work.

Have a look at this thread.

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=963201

There is a link in there to the Ignite manual which talks about booting from the operating environment disk then from tape as a workaround.

I find myself in the same position as you and I'm not sure how I feel about it.

Otherwise you might try setting up an ignite server, which is only okay if you happen to have a spare server/workstation floating around.

Re: Can I take ignite backup on SAN attached Tape Library

i want to know one more thing.

whether the command "make_tape_recovery -x inc_entire=vg00" will take the entire system backup or if I want to take entire system status to be backed up, which command i have to use.

I have Oracle RAC also. So by taking the ignite backup , can it take all the Cluster informations also, or i have to use any other commands.

Re: Can I take ignite backup on SAN attached Tape Library

I believe make_tape_recovery is used to backup the vg00 then it is better to use other backup software to backup/restore the rest.

There are some posts on the forums about this.

In our case we use Data Protector, which is interfaced with RMAN.
