Yes, you can run make_tape_recovery while the system is running. Since the Ignite backup process uses pax for backup, then it is subject to all the limitations of open and locaked files. If a file is open but not locked then backup will be successful. But for locked files, these will fail if pax cannot read them.

IS it a good idea to run Ignite on an active system? Yes and no. If you are backing up vg00 and vg00 contains nothing but system files and the system is not too busy, yes, it will be fine. But if you have a slow CPU (already running slow) and you have a high speed tape drive, then it will have a very big impact, like any backup program.

If you are concerned about CPU impact, then your server is already too small and needs upgrades (more RAM, more CPUs and/or faster CPUs).
