Can JetAdmin control printer paper trays?

I am looking at upgrading a printer so that we can use different paper in different trays. Can the JetAdmin get to that level?

If so, I guess I would need to set up two queues, with each one pointing to a different tray.

Sound possible?

Re: Can JetAdmin control printer paper trays?

Hi Dan,

The answer is almost certainly yes. It depends upon the interface file. Cd to /var/spool/lp/interface/model.orig. Vi the desired interface file (e.g. myprinter). You should be able to search for 'tray'.

Typically all you need to do is lp -dmyprinter -o tray1 (or -o tray2). If you want to set up two queues, you can add the printers and then hard set the tray optin in the interface file itself.

Re: Can JetAdmin control printer paper trays?

I couldn't find any options while configuring my printer with jetadmin. But in teh /opt/hpnp/bin directory you will find a programm called jetprint.

There you can specify which mediasource and outputtray you would like to use for your job. This is a tool with a nice GUI.

If you like to use something on commandline the just use the lp-options.

This options depend on what modelscript you are using. But on most HP Laserjets the options tray1, tray2 and tray3 are available. So you could use something like lp -dprinter -otray2 filename to print the file filename with paper of tray 2.

Do a man net_lj5x for the options of the LaserJet 5000 Series.

Hope this helps

What kind of printer are you upgrading to? What version of Jetadmin are you using? These two questions need to be addressed before you can fully understand the scope of the question.

Re: Can JetAdmin control printer paper trays?

Right now, we use HP LaserJet Series II (gasp! - I bet you the engineering team was fired for that blunder, making printers that last 20 years!), but the replacement printers would be an HP 4000 series or 5000 series.

Before I went to justify one printer to replace two Series IIs, I wanted to make sure I could direct printing of invoices to two different trays.

Re: Can JetAdmin control printer paper trays?

The LaserJet II is a solid text printer but is 5 generations old. The maximum parallel speed is about 20-30 Kbytes/sec so printing graphics and bitmaps (all special fonts must be bitmaps) is r-e-a-l-l-y slow.

The good news is that new HP LaserJets are dozens of times faster and have dozens of new options to control things like picking different input trays as well as output trays. You can select these with simple lp -o options.

Re: Can JetAdmin control printer paper trays?

Yes, they are really slow. But for the most part, we print invoices based on ASCII text, so they do there job. My problem is the suckers just won't break!!! I am contemplating putting a drop of Crazy Glue on a sheet of paper just before the printer grabs it...

...either that or the printer will suffer the same fate as the fax machine in the movie "Office Space".
