can ping, can't print

Hi,
Network printer HP8000
Last week this odd behavior started; the printer is keeping jobs in the queue, and no error messages are displayed. After I turned it off for 3 hours, it started printing again. Today, the same story, the printer is keeping the jobs in the queue. Where I can start to solve this issue? The print server is on a clustered architecture, for the port creating standard TCP/IP port was used.

Thanks in advanced for any help anyone can provide me

Re: can ping, can't print

Hello,

It kind of sounds like an ip address conflict. Could there possibly be something in your environment that has been configured with the same ip address? I would turn the printer completely off and ping the printer's assigned ip address and see if you get a reply.

Hope this helps!

Re: can ping, can't print

You may have a networking issue.

Check traceroute and see if there is a hangup.

See if you can telnet to printer port as follows.

telnet ip_of_printer 9100

Or whatever the open printer port is.

You will get good diagnostics.

Re: can ping, can't print

Thanks for responding
IP conflict, on server and printers in our environment is not possible because they are out of the scope of the DHCP server.

I did try the tracert command it came out with path to reach the printer with no errors.
I did not telneting to it, will do that as soon as I get to work.

Re: can ping, can't print

Hi

Look at TEOJ and idle timeout on the printer

Also use hpnpadmin -s printerip

Re: can ping, can't print

Some printers can be affected by malicious items on your net. We had several network printers compromised by viruses floating around. Check the firmware revision. It may be a known issue.

Re: can ping, can't print

Following up with the network problems, always perform a printer selftest when the printer stops working. You will likely find a DUP IP or DUP ARP or similar error reported in the JetDirect section of the printer's selftest page. Also use the hpnpadmin -v 12.34.56.78 to query the printer's JetDirect LAN card. hpnpadmin is found in /opt/hpnpl/bin

Re: can ping, can't print

Thanks everyone for following up on my problem.
I called the technician, he has diagnosticed that the jet direct board is the one that is causing the problems because when I type the IP address on the browser no menu is displayed for this particular printer.
When I tried to telnet to it, I received an RPC error message.

Thank you all very much
