Re: can't boot in single user mode

This might be a long shot, but are you using /sbin/sh for root's shell?

Re: can't boot in single user mode

Once the 'init single user mode' message is displayed, you should be prompted with a '#' sign. If so you are 'root' and can then change the password.

'init single user mode'

#
# passwd root

Re: can't boot in single user mode

Hello !
You have to " reboot " your machine and stop the autoboot process pressing any key, you have to be fast with it, because you have got only 10 seconds to make it.
Them, choose boot from primary device configurated " bo pri ".
Then, you have say " yes " to the cuestion " Want you to interact with ISL ? "
Then type " hpux -is " on ISL prompt.
This make at your system to start on single user mode, once on it, you can change the root password.
I hope my anwer really help you.
So please do not forget to give us points.
Thanks in advance.

Reboot server and interrupt within the 10 second period. Answer Y to interact with ISL and boot in single user. Then change passwd as normal.

Re: can't boot in single user mode

Just about to mention that!

Note that the only file systems available in init S are / and /stand.
Make sure there is nothing referenced in /usr/bin /usr/sbin etc..

Bill
It works for me (tm)

Re: can't boot in single user mode

Nina,

If you perform all the above actions and still cannot get into single-user mode, you might be in a catch-22 situation wherein you need to go to single-user mode to reset root's passwd, but need to be root to fix whatever is keeping you from entering single-user mode.

You stated that you received this desktop from your company. Does your company also have the the HP-UX install media? Because you might reach a point where you have to perform a cold (re)install.

Good luck!
