Can't Boot System
Whenever I try to boot up(hpux -is) I get the following error message "/stand/vmunix /stand not found"
I've tried hpux -ls, and I get "can't open / directory"
When I search for the devices at bootup I only see pO - IDE and P1 fwscsi.6.0 (I've tried to boot using bo alt but I still can't get anywhere
This is a new machine with no important files.
Can I reinstall with the HPUX Install and Core OS software and start over?
All the documentation and help I have received tells me to boot up off of my CDrom. I don't have a tape drive installed. How can I see my CDrom drive? What are the steps need to recover?

Re: Can't Boot System
1.check the disk is getting sensed in IPL promt. using sea
if not check the disk physycal connection.
2.then search for bootable devices using sea -isl
if you dont find that means there is no bootable disk .
3.then you should get devices with ISL (initial system loader)
As you said if you could find disk , you can verywell boot from CD and install OS.

Re: Can't Boot System
Even without a tape drive or a CD-ROM, you can still boot off the network and install from an Ignite-UX server that is housing your OS depots. That is of course provided that your LAN card is working properly in the first place.

Re: Can't Boot System
P0 8/4.5 Random access media
P1 8/16/5.2 Random access media
P2 8/16/6.0 LAN Module
Main Menu: Enter command >
5.2 is normal for the cdrom. In this case I would type P1 to boot from the cdrom.
#To answer your other question, to list what Operating Systems are loaded type ls at the ILS> prompt.
Let me know if this helps

Re: Can't Boot System
1.Did you try booting through alternate kernel ? Do this by running
ISL>hpux -is /stand/vmunix.prev
This works if your /stand/vmunix is corrupt. But if your entire /stand directory is missing, this will not work.
2.After booting through Installation Media, you can select "Recover HP-UX" menu and try to rebuild the kernel and bootlif.
3.If these steps don't work, you have to reinstall the OS. Don't forget to install the patch budle immediatley after installing the OS
