can't get consistant network connection

My network card status keeps going from connected to disconnected constantly. Although I could still get a reply from the loopback address, I changed the network card, my cable modem, and the cat5 cable connected to them. I even tried different PCI slots. The problems stands. Any suggestions?

Re: can't get consistant network connection

Check with you cable internet provider. I have had trouble similar to this in the past and it was the ISP's problem.

Have them check the signal strength coming into your home. If the signal strength is too low, then you can have problems just like you are seeing.

Re: can't get consistant network connection

As you have posted the same qquestion to both winXP and hpux forums, I am not sure which platform you are actually experiencing the problem, but if the answer is both, I'd check the cable modem and or router.

Re: can't get consistant network connection

Hi,

There is nothing wrong with your system, util there is no virus affected to your mahine. You can check with your service provider to send a service engineer and troubleshoot this issue. It's something related to the cable modem or the router.

Re: can't get consistant network connection

I apologize for submitting this question to both platforms, my mistake. It is a Windows XP platform, there is no router, and the cable guy already checked the cable modem. I was hoping that the mother board wasn't fried. The first network card was onboard, the new one is a PCI connection.

Re: can't get consistant network connection

I'm going to call the cable company one more time and have them check the signal strength. I thought they did that before they even came out, but I'm going to talk to another cable person to make for certain. I'll let you know. Thanks everyone!

Re: can't get consistant network connection

I believe it's fixed now. I went to the LAN connection, right clicked on it, and clicked on repair. I'm not sure what that does, but it worked.

Re: can't get consistant network connection

It repaired a winsock dll file that became infected by adware.

Re: can't get consistant network connection

Hi,

There are so many trojens and funny viruses roaming on the net. Mostly these viruses itself will make the system to behave like an hardware failure. Ensure that your machine is always protected from virus and updated the scan engines. Don't download free adware removal programs, which internal will install virus to your machine.

Re: can't get consistant network connection

This could be dead gateway probe problem. ndd has a setting that queries a gateway with icmpprobes. If this ndd setting (ip_ire_w_probe) is set to 1.

ndd -get /dev/ip ip_ire_gw_probe

Also did you check cables and switch port settings??
What does following report??

netfmt -f /var/adm/netl.LOG*
lanadmin -g "nm_id_of_card"
