Can't gig card up and running

Hello,
I need to migrate our primary network connection from the built in 100FD card to an addon gig card, model A6825-60101. Once the network team moves the cable on the switch to a gig connection I modify netconf, hpigelanconf and reboot. When the system comes up lan7 (the gig card) comes up with the error "Device busy". When a do a lanscan, lan7 does not show up.
The network switch is set to 1000FD while the hpigelanconf is set at auto_on. With the cable plugged in a linkloop fails.
I've also been able to hard code the ip address on my laptop, connect it to the cable and verify connectivity at 1000FD. I suspect the gig card may be bad but am not sure how to verify it.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

I think that the card is bad too. Maybe you can try to do a test via "mstm" software to get more information about the status od the card.

Re: Can't gig card up and running

hi,

gigabit cards on hpux are only supported and will work correctly if set to auto_neg at both ends.

change the switch to auto instead of 1000FD and it should come up ok. Also make sure the cable is of the required standard to acheive this speed.

I've come across more than one occasion that the cable has been just cat5 and they would only ever run at 100.

Re: Can't gig card up and running

If you do a lanscan and it does not show up then something is wrong with the card.

what does ioscan show for hardware ?

Re: Can't gig card up and running

While the cable was plugged into the gig card the interface would not show up on the lanscan. I could see the card using ioscan.

Now that the cable is disconnected I can see the interface via lanscan.

I'm also able to plumb it and connect to the interface, via cross over cable, to my laptop.

At this point I'm leaning toward the network switch setting as the problem.

Re: Can't gig card up and running

If the card disappears from ioscan or lanscan with the cable plugged in I would initially think of a bad patch cable.

Also, for the config of 1000MB cards. Always configure card ( or leave at default )and switch for auto_negotiate.

Re: Can't gig card up and running

try

1.100FD/autoneg OFF on both NIC and switch side
2.1000FD/autoneg ON on both NIC and switch side

you dont need to restart the server when you modify the config files.

/sbin/init.d/net stop/start would be fine.

if this is a dual port card then move the cable to the other port and see.

Also the analysing(netfmt) the /var/adm/nettl.LOG00[0-1] will also give more information.

Re: Can't gig card up and running

hi tom,

As you can get it to work 1000fd to your laptop that proves the card works!

If the software and hardware interface both come up ok then your ok at the server end

As i said earlier get the networking team to change the switch settings to auto_neg and i'd be confident it will come up fine

Re: Can't gig card up and running

I've had a similiar issue. Making sure both the card and switch were set to auto_neg solved the problem.
