Can't install 10.20 oon Myl Apollo 735

Hi,

i tryed to install HP-UX 10.20 on my 735/125. (144 MB RAM, 2* 1 GB Wide SCSI) But it stops with:

vuseg=f90000

System Console is on the ITE
Networking memory for fragment reassembly is restricted to 1315872 bytes
Swap device table: (start & size in 512-byte blocks)
entry 0 - auto configured on root device; ignored - no room
WARNING: No dump device configured. Dump is disabled.

successful HP-UX Installation, please check the "/etc/eisa/config.err"
file for any EISA configuration messages.
* Scanning system for IO devices...

Some LED's are blinking, the machin beeps, and then the installation process stoped. The system-heartbeat LED is still blinking,
and i can move around on the screen with my keyboard.

Some ideas, what's went wrong, and how to fix it?

Greetings Oliver

Check the size of you swap-space. The line starting with "Swap device table" and ending with "ignored - no room" doesn't look good.

How are your disks configured?
LVM, how many filesystems, sizes ... ?

Hi Oliver,

I agree with teh solution of Hartmut.
You may increase your swap space and should be at least 2 times the memory space. So, you may configure 288 MB ( since you have 144 MB RAM).

Hi,

Have you partitioned your disks? Assigned any space for swap? If not yet, do so first.

Re: Can't install 10.20 oon Myl Apollo 735

You only have 2G of disk to play with and this would be the minimum for 10.20.

I prefer to have at least 2-2G drives for 10.20.

With only 2G total, you will not have much left for anything else.

Set the swap at 256 Meg and you might have room for the op system.

Re: Can't install 10.20 oon Myl Apollo 735

the system has 2 * 1GB Diff. SCSI (C2247) disks, with HP-UX 9.05 iirc installed. But i can do nothing with that installation.
This disks where cleared before i get these machine. no /etc/initab, no dd, really _nothing_ (it boots in single user mode, and i can move arround with cd and ls ;). So i can't create a swap partition on these disks. I also have no other differential SCSI controller. so it's ''impossible'' to mount the disks on another system.

It must be possible to install 10.2 with no diskspace?! Because, how do i make an initial Installation when nothing is configured on the disks?

And to the size issue. All my data comes from NFS, only the system must lay on the local hard drives. I plan to buy a new (quite) drive. But actually i only have these noisy old disks...

Re: Can't install 10.20 oon Myl Apollo 735

Of course you can install the 10.20 (or any other) HPOUX system without anything on your current disks. You use the CD-ROM or ignite to do this. That means you boot a special install system from CD or over LAN.
The install system allows you to setup your disks (LVM yes/no, HFS vs. JFS, Swap-Space, ...).

If something went wrong here, and you came up with a system without any swap, the best thing will be to reinstall the whole system.

Ok?

Re: Can't install 10.20 oon Myl Apollo 735

Set swap to around 192MB

Vastly reduce /var /tmp /home and / defaults.

Set Save Patches to false.

All of this is available from the installation menu.

Make sure too that if you have added memory from one system to another, in these guys you need to load in pairs for interleaving reasons (side by side equal - quite like the Ks)

Later,
Bill

Re: Can't install 10.20 oon Myl Apollo 735

Having a look at this string..

"====== HP-UX Installation Initialization (Mon Jun 10 03:32:19 EDT 1996)
@(#) install/init (opt) $Revision: 5.30 $
* EISA configuration has completed. Following the configuration of a

file for any EISA configuration messages.
* Scanning system for IO devices..."
it looks to me like this is the INITIAL screen after you have booted off the 10.20 install CD? The "ioscan" taking place the machine just stops?

In the boot admin area, can you search and find both disks? SCSI id's all unique? Are the disks ok? The fact that things are *missing* under 9.05 could indicate a disk problem... noisy C2247 (sardine tin 1GB) is also not good.

Re: Can't install 10.20 oon Myl Apollo 735

Hello guys,

I think we got to stop posting on how to add swapspace. The message about "no room" and "dump disabled" are very normal during the beginning of an installation.

Also, the machine starts scanning for I/O devices before you have any chance to configure your installation parameters.

Oliver, could you go into BOOT ADMIN mode and do a SEARCH to list all your SCSI devices ? I think there could be a problem there (duplicate SCSI address ???).

Thats True...

Search for devices with bootable Media:

P0 scsi.5.0 TOSHIBA CD-ROM XM-3301TA
IPL
P1 fwscsi.5.0 HP C2247
IPL

(I've tested several SCSI-ID Combinations)

A Hardware-Component List:

System (Core I/O Card): A2095-66533
Processor Card: A2841-66005
VSC Interface Card: A1659-66001
EISA-Slot Card: A1094-66531

Connected on FastSCSI:
- External TOSHIBA CD-ROM XM-3301TA 0272

Connected on Wide-Differential-SCSI:
- HP C2247(-69275)
- HP C2247(-60064)

No EISA Devices attached.

Re: Can't install 10.20 oon Myl Apollo 735

Hello Oliver, you did a search for BOOTABLE devices, that doesn't return the list of ALL your devices.

Try just a SEARCH. In your search IPL, only one harddisk is returned, I would like to see the other harddisk in a scanlist.

Re: Can't install 10.20 oon Myl Apollo 735

Oliver... One thing on the 735, check the termination of the Diff bus.

Can cause problems in the build process... The fact that you don't get a TOC is worrysome, however just check this.

What is the manufacture date of the HP-UX 10.20 CD's you are installing off?

One other thing. When everything stops, are ther other sys led's on or just heartbeat?

If you full the little flap down, which LED's are on?
