Can't see a scsi disk

Hi everybody,

I have a K420 with an enclosure attached to a scsi.

After a reboot I can't see anything mounted there: lv's, vg's, pv's

I don't know what to check.

I don't have any results on that path from the ioscan -fnC disk

Some help?

Re: Can't see a scsi disk

Does the ioscan show NO_HW? What do you see in the ioscan listing and could you post it here.

Re: Can't see a scsi disk

Without knowing the H/W path to the enclosure I dont know what to look for. Could you point out which paths are the missing ones. My guess is that it is either "8/8/1/0" or "10/8" or "8/0" paths. Please clarify. Also look inside the syslog file for SCSI related error messages.

Re: Can't see a scsi disk

Hi again,

The paths where I used to have my disks were 10/4/8 and 10/8

Re: Can't see a scsi disk

Note that the controller on path 10/4/8 is a single-ended SCSI device and the controller on the 10/8 path is a High-Voltage Differential SCSI device. Bear in mind that these two SCSI "flavors" are absolutely incompatible and that all devices on an HVD bus (including terminators) must be HVD devices. SE SCSI devices are compatible with LVD devices. The first thing that you should verify are the type of devices that you have connected. The connectors and cables mean nothing as both can be used on either bus. On occasion, permanent damage is done when a SE SCSI device is connected on an HVD bus.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Can't see a scsi disk

10/4/8 is a SE-SCSI while 10/8 is a FWD-SCSI. please let us know the HP product number of the enclosure you are using. if it is an enclosure with black colored disks (HA enclosure), then the disk with the capacity labeled in purple are FWD-SCSI disks.

Hi Sand, Clay, tkc,

I'm going to verify all of your suggestions but, let me state that this is an old machine and was working for several years without any kind of change, is this argument usefull?

Re: Can't see a scsi disk

I already saw what 'u told me,

I had attached an Storage Enclosure and a Disk Array.

The disk of the enclosure are SE, those of the array, i'm not sure, on the front only display 9Gb LP

The enclosure is connected from 10/4/8 SCSI (SE) Parallel on the back pane

The disk array has 4 terminals, but we only use 2 from the back pane, one is labeled as Optional I/O (X/8)* the other one is Slot 1(8/4) both are HSC F/W SCSI

Re: Can't see a scsi disk

I assume the "enclosure" is probably an A3312 (Jamaica); if so that could be split into 2 buses of 4 drives each. One bus could be SE and the other HVD/FWD --- in the same enclosure. All it would take to explain your observed behavior would be reversed cables between those two buses. A failed power supply would also explain it.

Please describe your enclosure and perhaps more can be done.

Re: Can't see a scsi disk

Clay,

The enclosure have space for 2 power units even i only have one. It has 2 kind of columns A and B with floppy disk on top, and 4 slots for SE disk, only the B tower has the 4 disk and anything on the other.

I'm more worried about the disk array because of it's capacity of 100 GB.

On the back pane in the same card of the path 10/8 I have another scsi terminal (X/0)* HSC F/W SCSI, do you think I can plug the array to this one?

Maybe I wasn't clear, I only have this disk array with 20 disk of 9GB each. On the back of the array I have 4 connections, two of them attached, the first to the path 10/8 not working, and the other to the card (8/4) with no problems.

Thanks,

Re: Can't see a scsi disk

the storage enclosure shld be connected to 10/4/8 since it is a SE-SCSI bus. the disks should have yellow label for their capacity info. as for the disk array, it should be connected to 10/8 and it looks like it is a model 20 nike array. this array should be white in color and the rear of each controller should have serial port where you can access to it and check the status of the array in the grid manager menu.

Re: Can't see a scsi disk

if your array is indeed the model 20 disk array, check the status of the array first before proceeding further. the link below will show you how you can connect to the grid manager :

Re: Can't see a scsi disk

TKC, Clay, Sandman, thank you for helping me to better understand what the problem was, HP Support comes and change the controler that was damaged.
