Can't stop the console messages from scrolling

Hello all,

I am on the remote console of a server, and I can't stop the messages from scrolling. I am trying to reset SSH, but can't do anything. Is there a way for me to stop the messages on the console from the MP console? Please help!!

Re: Can't stop the console messages from scrolling

Try " s" to stop the scrolling, " q" to resume.

Thanks. I stopped the scrolling, but I can't do any commands. Any remedy to this?

Re: Can't stop the console messages from scrolling

Maybe we did not understand your problem.

What do you mean by "stop from csrolling"?

The key sequence will stop the terminal until you release it again.

You cannot stop it and type commands before you release it again.

Please explain.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Can't stop the console messages from scrolling

The problem is that we cannot get into the server, due to SSHD not running. I went to the console to login, and restart SSHD, but I can't type any commands because of messages scrolling on the screen. I need to be able to restart SSHD, but can't input any commands on the console due to the scrolling.

Re: Can't stop the console messages from scrolling

And before anyone asks, SSH is the only way in (besides the console).

Re: Can't stop the console messages from scrolling

Your console will probably accept your commands even if it continuously prints other messages.

Can you stop sendmail?

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Can't stop the console messages from scrolling

No luck. I can't exit, or do any commands. Scrolling to fast.

Re: Can't stop the console messages from scrolling

It sounds to me like it's time for a "simulated power failure". That's when you either cycle the power button or find and depress the TOC button. If the only way in is through SSH, which is not running, then you really don't have any other choice.

Torsten does make a good point though. If you type in "/sbin/init.d/sshd start" and press enter, the command will probably be accepted, whether your typing is obscured by the scrolling or not.

Tried to issue the commands, but no dice.

Re: Can't stop the console messages from scrolling

I finally was able to get into the server to start ssh, but the messages are scrolling there too.

Here is the sendmail message:

Oct 24 06:50:49 server2 sendmail[16284]: EAA12606: to=user@domain.com, delay=02:50:46, mailer=relay, relay=relay.net, stat=Transient parse error -- message queued for future delivery

I stopped sendmail, but the messages keep scrolling. Any ideas?

Re: Can't stop the console messages from scrolling

The messages may scrolling some minutes after stopping the process, because the console is slow and the buffer is full ... be patient.

Hope this helps!

It was happening in my ssh session too, wich I thought was on the level of "mmmmmkay?"

Re: Can't stop the console messages from scrolling

Why not login as a regular user, then use sudo or su to attain root privileges. Then stop sendmail (/sbin/init.d/sendmail stop).
