Cannot find tape drive

Hi All,

I am having an issue where my system is unable to find the tape drive.
I have done the following:
1). ioscan -funC tape: did not work
2). insf -e -H 0/0/2/0: did not work
3). insf -e : did not work
4). SAM: tried to add the tape drivers, but it said that it would compile and introduce the new kernel, and I was not sure what this would do. I did not want to be left with an unusable system.
here is my uname -a:
# uname -a
HP-UX hwsfo72 B.11.00 U 9000/800 79990108 unlimited-user license
#

any thoughts?

Re: Cannot find tape drive

A little more information would be useful:

1) What type of tape drive (DDS? DLT? Internal? External?)
2) What type of server?
3) Is the tape drive detected on boot console menu?
4) Output of 'ioscan -fnC tape' (is that shows as UNCLAIMED?)
5) What drivers are you trying to add from SAM?

Whenever you add any driver through SAM, you need to reconfigure a new kernel and reboot the system. That's normal and safe during driver addition.

Re: Cannot find tape drive

If you have a DDS drive you probably don;t have the stape driver in the kernel . YOu can include that in the kernel using sam , and rebult the kernel and reboot the system . This time the tape drive should be recignised .

If its DLT drive and you have the stape driver then proabablu you don't have all the scsi patches .

Re: Cannot find tape drive

Hi Wilson,

1). The server is HP 9000.
please review the uname -a

2). The tape drive is external DDS.
it's a Jetstore 6000.

3). doing an ioscan -fnC tape shows no output at all.

thanks

Re: Cannot find tape drive

Again, I meant which class of server - N, L, K, rp series etc.

1) Does the tape drive identified at boot console menu? If not, it is not detected on this server. Check the connections, cables, termination and compatibility.

2) If it shows in boot menu, then you need to add the drivers in kernel - stape and tape2. Rebuild the kernel and reboot the server. You can do it through SAM.

Also, do an 'ioscan -fn' and look for any device that shows as 'UNCLAIMED'.

Re: Cannot find tape drive

If your tape drive is missing from # ioscan -fnC tape, then you need to examine the hardware, cabling, termination, etc.

Re: Cannot find tape drive

What is your specific model? (type model at the prompt)

please attach a full ioscan -fn

also, what are you connecting the drive to?

What are the chances...
