Cannot install HP 11.00 Dec 2001 on old C class (C180-C360)

We experiment some pbs to install old C-class systems (C180, C360) w/ the HP-UX 11.00 CORE OS December 2001 media (and higher level).

Error message looks like :

------------
Booting...
WARN 80F9
Cannot find ENTRY_TEST.
Failed to initialize.
ENTRY_INIT
Status = -4
WARN 80F5
Failed to initialize.

Status -4 means "An unrecoverable hardware error has occurred between the processor PDC and IODC on the target controller or device.".
Well, suspecting a H/W issue would be the 1st option, but I cannot so easily explain why the same installation process works fine w/ older media (like June 2000 core OS).
Similar pbs occur when booting from an ignite tape created w/ a working system, so neither the CD reader or the CD itself are causing the troubles.

Different tests have been run on several systems and we got the same results.

Looks like a config file is missing in the new CORE OS and therefore old system cannot boot.

So I would ask 2 questions :
1. Are there any known constraints to use the latest 11.00 core OS CD on old 700 H/W ? (December 2001)

2. How can I install an old C-Class w/ the new CORE OS ? I don't want to use the old ACE1199 because I want to manage only 1 image for the whole range of systems, starting from C180 to C3700.

Thanks.

Just a thought . You are'nt 800 series install disks are you ?.

I know that 11i at least is available with three flavours (plus original base) for 800 series and two for 700 series)

The latest core-OS install/update/recovery CD for 11.0 is now the March 2002 version. Part number 5012-0053. If there were problems with the older Dec2001 install CD possibly theyve been fixed in the Mar2002 version, give it a try.

Hello,

with status = -4, the only causes i know are
- disk failure, need to replace
- the path to the disk is experiencing problems

Turn all off during 30 second and chack led access to disks to know if it is a disk failure or the path (LED ok could be disk, no LED could be the patch).

No more experience on it.
Hope it can helps.

Interesting - I've currently got the Mar 2002 OE cd's loading on a C160. These are the same cd's I just recently used to build an L class.

Anyway, they seem to work fine, I'd look into something newer than the Dec 2001 set.

Re: Cannot install HP 11.00 Dec 2001 on old C class (C180-C360)

Hi

There is no different flavours for 800 and 700 in 11.0. CD is same for all.

I feel there is something wrong with ur CD. Or let me know, how U are installing this?? Upgrading from an older version or a fresh installation.

In a fresh installation there should not be any problem, in upgradation there are chances. If U stuck up in upgradation, then go for a fresh installation.

Best of luck

Re: Cannot install HP 11.00 Dec 2001 on old C class (C180-C360)

Well,

The weird thing is that using the Dec 2001 media on a new C-class system works fine.
Using the June 2000 media on an old C-class works fine too.

when creating a tape boot image of a C3600 which is installed with the media that doesn't work with the C180 (ie Dec 2001 rel), then installing a C180 from that
tape is not working (same error occurs as with the CD).

Sorry Jerome, if I'd had the Dec cd's I would have tried them but all I had was the latest ones. It's going along swimingly, though.

Good luck,
Pete

You probably should compare firmware levels. You may need to update the firmware.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Hi Jerome,

Check the integrity of the CD drive on that C180. Can it read other/any CDs reliably?
Sounds like it starts to read the CD then chokes & dies,
Don't forget the controller as well.
If you already have an OS on it & you have the stm utils - try exercising it.
If you dont have the utils try a dd copy to /dev/null from it.

Re: Cannot install HP 11.00 Dec 2001 on old C class (C180-C360)

Hi Jerome,

I had a similar problem on an older C180. It actually let me install from the Dec 2001 Support CD's (although I had some really odd warnings come up). However, when I went to boot it it could no longer find anything on the internal boot path (Fast Wide one).
Anyway, it turned out that I needed to upgrade the firmware (had 2.6, installed 6.1). Everything worked fine after that.
I have not patched it since, but did reinstall it with the Dec 2001 11.11 Core CD.
