Cannot install HPUX on Itanium

Hi all,

I am installing HP-UX on Itanium, everything seems to be right befor
"Launching :IINSTALL
SIZE: Text:20176K + Data:2798K + BSS:2496K = Total:25471K "
at this point, my procedure is freezed (stoped) and no working anymore.
I used "HP-UX 11i V1.6 OE EN (5012-1929)".
Thank you for your help

Re: Cannot install HPUX on Itanium

I faced a similar kind of problem on A500(PA RISC) server. After dumping text, data and bss it used to crash. I was said by HP thats its the problem with the boot disk. But later on it was diagnosed that the problem was with one of the CPU. Is this a new server? you might better raise a call with HP and seek their advice on the Hardware.

Thanks

Re: Cannot install HPUX on Itanium

Hi!

At this point the most time consuming thing is HW discovery (scanning and initializing). So if you get stuck there it is likely to be HW related.

How long did you wait? The I/O discovery may take several minutes...

Re: Cannot install HPUX on Itanium

Hi,
I am using 1G RAM and CPU 900MHz and no peripheral is connected. I dont think it initialize HW because It take a long long time like freezing.
Who can help me in urgent and show me how to trouble shoot it.
Thanks.

Re: Cannot install HPUX on Itanium

I think, logging a call with your local response center would be a good idea.

First things to check would be the firmware level of that machines. Another point is the install media... is the CD ok? What about booting from an Ignite Server via network?

Re: Cannot install HPUX on Itanium

Yes, I/O scanning can take a while, but
I believe he'd see other messages before this. I don't have the time to do a lot of testing on my rx2600 this morning, but remember some similar problems that were due to console connection problems. The point where things stop being visible happens to be the same point where the system is switching from very low-level I/O calls to higher level console I/O calls.

An rx2600 I have here prints:
Launching /stand/vmunix
SIZE: Text:21204K + Data:2645K + BSS:3819K = Total:27669K

Console is on a Serial Device
Booting kernel...

(I'm using a pre-release version of HP-UX
that's a bit newer than what's externally
shipping, and using the regular kernel, not
the install kernel, but the idea should be
similar.)

A quick thing to verify is that you are connected to the proper console port. It's easy to assume that since you're seeing some characters you're connected to the right port, but this isn't always the case. I've been
burned by that on the rx2600 prototypes
I've worked with.

At the back of the rx2600 is a port marked
console/remote/UPS. There should be a cable
that splits this connection into 3 9 pin
connections. Are you using this splitter cable and do you have the console port connected to the 9-pin end of this that's marked 'console' on the 9-pin connector
shell? That configuration works fine for
me on an rx2600 that just came from the
factory a few days ago.

Re: Cannot install HPUX on Itanium

Hi,
I found a warning: " edd30 not found". But HP-UX
requires edd30 to be on. So, how to install edd30?

Re: Cannot install HPUX on Itanium

If edd30 not found, whether or not to install HPUX at SCSI ID 0? Is edd30 important when install HPUX on itanum?
Thanks.

Re: Cannot install HPUX on Itanium

Hi Trung,

If you install multiple OS on one itanium you need to set edd30=on, if you only install hpux set it off.

MULTIPLE OS ONLY
Make sure that edd30 is on. If edd30 is off, the root disk must be located at target id 0. Since we will have boot disks on target id 0 and 1, we need to turn the option on. During boot process select EFI shell, type edd30 on at the Shell> prompt. NOTE: You can set this option during the installation of the HP-UX 11iv.15 operating-system software.
So you need a boot disk at target id 0, set edd30 during hpux install off.

Kind regards,

Robert-Jan.

Re: Cannot install HPUX on Itanium

Hi Robert-Jan,
Thank you Robert, I want only install hpux so dont care "edd30". But why I cannot install hpux, I always reach the following point:
"Launching :IINSTALL
SIZE: Text:20176K + Data:2798K + BSS:2496K = Total:25471K "
and it stop. Do you know why? I think that it check HW is impossible because it seems to be freeze.
Thank so much if you could help me to trouble shoot it.

Re: Cannot install HPUX on Itanium

Maybe, Doug is right with his assumption that something's wrong with the console configuration.

I attach a small (inofficial) doc that explains some things.
