Cannot unmount NFS dir on Itanium server having HP-UX 11.20

HI,
We are facing a problem with our HP Itanium IA64 Server loaded with HP-UX 11.20 (64-bit) Os .

We Cannot unmount the NFS directories using umount command.
The mounting option in fstab file is

"nfsserver:/home/abc /home/abc nfs rw,nosuid,bg,soft 0 0 "

The unmount Error after killing all process is given bellow..

earth:/ 16 ] fuser -kc /home/abc
/home/bsc:

earth:/ 17 ] umount /home/bsc
nfs umount: nfs_unmount: /home/abc: is busy
earth:/ 18 ]

This problem is specifi to this itanium servers having hp 11.20 only.

Is there any mounting option in fstab missing?

Thanks & Regards
Shashi

Re: Cannot unmount NFS dir on Itanium server having HP-UX 11.20

hai Shashi,

You are trying to unmount the mounted directory on using root ( super user) then,

Is there any user being inside the mounted directory or using the file there.

Specifically if any one inside the mounted directory, we couldn't umount it and we will get error as nfs umount: nfs_unmount: mount-point: is busy

Try to check users availabilty in that.

And more is it your version 11.20 ?!

I am curious is there any release of 11.20.
check with uname -a?

Re: Cannot unmount NFS dir on Itanium server having HP-UX 11.20

Hi Shashi,

I don't know of a specific problem with 11.20, but I know there are many new features available in 11i v2 update 2 that will address this problem.

In 11i v2u2 HP will be providing a forcible unmount option, even for NFS filesystems. So if you have a hung mount point you could do a "umount -f " and get it would force the filesystem to unmount, even if the NFS server is down.

For releases prior to 11i v2 update 2, I've written a technical paper on techniques you can use to get a blocked filesystem to unmount. It is located at:

http://www.docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/3929/ForciblyUnmountingNFSFilesystems.pdf

Also, you might want to check how much longer 11.20 is supported by HP. My guess is HP will be wanting most 11.20 customers to upgrade to 11i v2 update 2 for the long term.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Dave

Re: Cannot unmount NFS dir on Itanium server having HP-UX 11.20

Hi Muthu,

Yes, 11.20 was a real HP-UX release. It was the first release HP came out with for Itanium servers. It was intended to be a very short lived release to help ISV partners begin porting their applications to the Itanium platform.

There was also an 11.22 release, but that again was a short lived release for early adopters to begin porting and testing new functionality and new CPUs.

The long term strategy of any customer with these OS's would be to move to 11.23 update 2 (i.e. 11i v2 update 2). This release will be coming out in the October 2004 timeframe, and it is expected to be a long term release.

The next major release of HP-UX will be lli v3, and it will add much new functionality and will likely be an Enterprise class release, meaning it will be supported for a number of years.

Again, my recommendation to anyone running 11.20, 11.22, 11.23 or even 11i v1 would be to update to 11i v2 update 2 when it becomes available this fall.

Regards,

Dave

Sorry, meant to say "next major release will be 11i v3", not lli v3. My lower-case L looked like a number one on my screen. ;)

Re: Cannot unmount NFS dir on Itanium server having HP-UX 11.20

Indeed 11.20 was a "real" release insofar as there was an 11.20 kernel "released" into the wild as it were. It was a porting vehicle for ISVs and was supported only on the very first generation Itanium systems - the i2000 and the rx4610 - which were based on the so called "Merced" CPU.

Neither 11.20 nor Merced are places to be these days. That would be 11.23 (either the first or the update) and Itanium2 - the CPU that is in the current generation of HP Integrity servers (rx1600, rx2600, rx4640, etc...)
