CDE Aries problem

CDE Aries problem

I am running HPUX 11.23 on a RX2600. I installed the 8/04 patch bundle and then attempted to install the 9/04 bundle which failed with a corruption problem on patch PHCO_31555. I removed the bundle and now can't login with CDE.
The startlog message tells me I have a Pthread error on line 8836 and ARIES32 does a core dump.
Any suggestions on repairing this?
Thanks.

swverify \*

Find out what patches are broken, read the notes and carefully consdier reinstalling with the following command line.

swinstall -x autoreboot=true -x reinstall=true -s /full_path/Patch_ID

Re: CDE Aries problem

Thanks Stephen.
Have gone through those steps twice already,
at least it hasn't gotten worse!
Patch and status is back to no corruptions and all filesets configured. (Wish I would have saved that 1st kernel!)
Networking, hostname, all of the normal 'suspects' seem to be fine. Can run failsafe session and launch Netscape, only CDE seems to have been affected.

Re: CDE Aries problem

1) In file /etc/default/nlspath comment the line NLSPATH=

2) Reinstall PHSS_31832 CDE Applications patch, but shut down
CDE before reinstalling.

The CDE environment can be shut down by running the
following commands as root:
- /usr/dt/bin/dtconfig -d
- /usr/dt/bin/dtconfig -kill
Note that these commands will terminate all CDE sessions
for all CDE users.

Once the patch has been installed, you may start CDE
back up with the following commands:
- /usr/dt/bin/dtconfig -e
- /sbin/init.d/dtlogin.rc start

3) Install new Aries patch
PHSS_32213

Re: CDE Aries problem

Hope you get back to where you were.

I'd be interestd to hear more about the original corruption problem:
- install from download or media?
- if download, do you think the download was suspect?

Re: CDE Aries problem

Thanks Zymunt, you gave me a little more insight into CDE. Unfortunately I seem to be in a dependency loop with no exit point.
Apparently PHKL_31500 was installed but corrupt so any attempt to remove and/or install the CDE patches results in a failure because of the PHKL patch. If you try to remove that, you get a message that it would make HPUX unbootable so it won't do it.
At this point its easier to reload the OS.

Scot.. the bundle was downloaded from HP,
BUNDLE11i_B.11.23.0409.3.depot. The dependency BUNDLE from August worked fine.

REMEMBER.. if you have a kernel that's working, make a copy and label it other than .prev!!
Thanks all.
