CDE hpux 11i (sessions)

Ive read the following in HPUX.Install for Blackbox 0.62.1 from http://hpux.connect.org.uk/ :

"Add the full path to the Window Manager to your ".xsession""

only problem is that they dont say where it should be, ive tried a bunch of different places, without any luck at all to get another window manager than CDE!

Is there any alternatives for one that wants to run an other window manager than CDE?

Re: CDE hpux 11i (sessions)

The reason why i want to run another window manager is to get a faster system. If i should install gnome it would probably look alot nicer than CDE... but the systems resources would probably be drained aswell.

I dont mind dtlogin, if i could chose anything except CDE or failsafe =/

If i could get this .xsession thingie to work it would be just fine... (seams to be pretty similiar to .xinitrc on linux systems)

Re: CDE hpux 11i (sessions)

I have migrated my systems to GNOME. There are some bumps on the road, but It pretty much works like my Linux boxes, which is nice.

HEre is a link to the software.

Re: CDE hpux 11i (sessions)

No, not a bit in fact... Im quite aware on how gnome works, and would consider it on a workstation, but now I want a fast window manager, and already have a couple installed... the only problem that is left is how i should be able to run them (without doing a hack of the failsafe session (yes its possible to redo this into starting afterstep, blackbox or amiwm) but then im without the failsafe level, and im not that sure that i want that)

Re: CDE hpux 11i (sessions)

I think the info at http://web.cuug.ab.ca/~dorfsmay/tech-pts/cde.html
may be what you're looking for.

To quote:
In .Xdefaults in your home directory, add this at the top: *wmStartupCommand: full_path_to_your_prefered_window_manager

Remember that you won't use dtwm any more, but you will still be in a dtsession, so to log out, you need to dtaction ExitSession.

for example in fvwm on an hpux I use this line in a menu: "Log out" Exec exec /usr/dt/bin/dtaction ExitSession

end quote.

That should do it on a per user basis, but now how to set the overall system default?

Re: CDE hpux 11i (sessions)

Well, its not the best of solutions, but never the less it works =) thanks alot Tom.

The best way would have been adding an option at the CDE login screen... but it seams to be disabled (or not implemented) in HPUX...

Re: CDE hpux 11i (sessions)

There is another issue here, when changing to another windowmanager i get alot of time to wait. when logging in it takes a minute or so after the windowmanager is started, and everytime is like the first time i login (get the help and filemanager). Even thou i have exited in the right manner. And the exit program also takes alot of time, even longer than the login delay. the first logut questions pops up right away, but after chosing Ok its a long delay before it actually logs out.

Re: CDE hpux 11i (sessions)

Yes, it worked fine with CDE, so thats why i noticed the difference when i run with another windowmanager.
