The system starts up fine and goes to the CDE login screen. I can enter a username, use all the menu options here, but as soon as I hit enter to proceed to the password entry prompt (or enter an incorrect or blank username), the display gets "corrupted" (for lack of a better term -- the lower portion of the login box kinda grays and streaks out as if it's not repainting correctly), and the mouse and keyboard become non-responsive.
Only way I've found to get out of this is to power off. When I hit the power button the machine drops to the console and shuts down cleanly, so obviously it's only X that is freezing up here.
Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this? Normally I'd log in remotely, but as there is not networking, and HP-UX doesn't appaer to have a working serial console login...
TIA!

SolutionYou can also boot to single user mode and change the init to 2 in /etc/inittab to get a terminal based login on VGA.
Check the logs in
/var/X11/Xserver/logs
for errors.
Run "dr_dt" from
/usr/contrib/bin/X11/dr_dt
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Is that box certified for 11.23. If not, stop now.

Re: CDE Login hangs on J6000; B.11.23 fresh install.
"HP-UX 11i v2 is not supported on PA-RISC Workstations. HP recommends that PA-RISC Workstation customers use HP-UX 11i v1. The HP-UX 11i v2 May 2005 release was the last release supported on the Itanium-based zx2000 and zx6000 workstations. These workstations have been discontinued as of September 2004."

But in this case not supported does not necessarily mean not working. It is your decision if you want to run an unsupported OS on your system.
If not needed, consider to disable X.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: CDE Login hangs on J6000; B.11.23 fresh install.
As torsten says, your best bet would be 11iV1. After this release only servers are supported. Specifically I think graphics drivers are no longer supported.
Bye

And argh it's difficult to use these forums sometimes... always error messages about them being "unavailable" popping up. :)
