CDE Login Problem

This should be some easy points for someone out there. I can't login to my CDE desktop (all logins rejected, including root), but can login fine through telnet, Xterm or other command logins. I think all this started when I switched over to a "Trusted" system. I've tried reversing this, but I still have the CDE login problems. Thoughts?

david, try setting your nsswitch.conf to look at files first.

/etc/nsswitch.conf

hosts: files [notfound=continue] dns

Thanks for the suggestion which was acted on, but didn't resolve the problem. Anything else?

Generally, no being able to login thru CDE is a problem with Xwindows not being able to set the display correctly. This can normally be traced back to not being able to resolve your own hostname properly as the DISPLAY variable is normally set to HOSTNAME:0.0

Check with nslookup on the IP address to make sure that the hostname matches the same output as the hostname command. If they are different then make the proper correction to either your name resolution (/etc/hosts, DNS, or NIS) or change the HOSTNAME via the hostname command.

If this does not work you may want to include any errors that you have and whether or not the CDE login screen will even come up.

Thanks Jason. All's well with hostname and display issues. I get the message "Login incorrect - please try again" when I try to login on the CDE desktop, using logins that work fine at the command line. Suggestions?

David, is this a trusted system? Do you have the CDE Runtime Patch applied?
