Check with nslookup on the IP address to make sure that the hostname matches the same output as the hostname command. If they are different then make the proper correction to either your name resolution (/etc/hosts, DNS, or NIS) or change the HOSTNAME via the hostname command.
If this does not work you may want to include any errors that you have and whether or not the CDE login screen will even come up.
