CDE Screen Saver

This should be an easy 10 points for someone out there.

To give my mind a rest from DDS4 tape drives, I went along to see the users this morning to ask if they had any problems they would like me to look at. The most important issue on anyone's mind was "I don't like my screensaver"!

I sat with him and we went through the list of available screensavers on CDE - he didn't like any of them!

He asked me if it was possible to add a file to the list of screensavers. I said I was sure it was and would investigate for him. I've looked in his home directory and can't find any files that look like the screensaver images. I've looked through the CDE User's Guide and Advanced User's and System Administrator's Guide, but can't find any reference to where the screensaver files are stored. So on to the questions:

1. Where are they stored?

2. Can I add a file so he can have the screensaver of his choice?

Re: CDE Screen Saver

Mark,

Take a look at the man page for dtstyle. It says that the screen savers are clients stored in the actions database. I'm still scanning to see if I can figure out how to interpret that, but it implies to me that you're not going to find them as a file somewhere.

Re: CDE Screen Saver

Cheryl,

That would appear to be exactly what I'm looking for - but I can't find it!

I've copied and pasted the reference number into both google and www.hp.com and neither of them produces a result for it. Do you have a URL for it?

Re: CDE Screen Saver

Cheryl,

That doc basically says to look at /usr/dt/examples/dtscreen/README, which no longer exists in 11.x releases. The closest thing I can find is /usr/dt/share/examples/dtterm/README, which "contains demonstrations of the DtTerm library". I don't quite see how that applies!

Re: CDE Screen Saver

Impressive efficiency Cheryl - I was going to ask for the post containing my email address to be removed after I had received the file. But I see I don't need to ask :-)

Re: CDE Screen Saver

File safely received and saved to disc.

I'll read it at my leisure (tomorrow unless something more important than screensavers pops up) and award points.

Re: CDE Screen Saver

Did I say this was an easy 10 points for someone?

The files referred to in the README that Cheryl sent to me are not on the workstations here - I've run a find, just in case they're in a different directory, but have drawn a blank.

I think I've spent enough time on someone not liking his screen saver, but I'll leave the thread open for a few days just in case anyone has any different ideas.

Re: CDE Screen Saver

Mark,

My two cents worth is that screen savers are a waste of CPU cycles - especially if more than one user shares this workstation. I tell my users not to use them. In fact, for most of my users, I've customized the front panel to eliminate dtstyle.

Re: CDE Screen Saver

What an excellent idea Pete.

But the workstation isn't shared and the user wants to use an image from "The Matrix" as his screen saver.

I suppose I could tell him I've scanned it and it contains a virus - I daren't put it on a workstation that shares network space with PCs!

Re: CDE Screen Saver

You could tell him it's a violation of copyright and you can't load it. ;^)
