CDE won't load

I have a HPUX 10.2 system that has been in active for quiet sometime and I am trying to bring it back to life and get it on my network. Since I have used it last the HOSTNAME and other network information has changed in DNS so I need to update it with the current information. I used the /etc/set_parms initial command to update the HOSTNAME, IP, GW and DNS info. Everything looks good in the netconf, hosts and resolv.conf files. I can ping and telnet other machines on my network both with ip and hostnames. But when I try and login to the console for all of my known users except root CDE will not come up, it simply kicks me back to the CDE login screen. I can rlogin to the machine using these users but nothing local. Can you give me a hint as to what this could be or which log files may give me a hint or what could be causing this?

Re: CDE won't load

Scott,

Where are these users' home directories located and do they have access to them. Check the /etc/passwd file to see what the home directory entries look like, then try to access them while logged in as root.

Re: CDE won't load

Hey Pete:

Yes, I see the entries for the user in /etc/passwd file and the permissios are read for everyone and root owns it. The home diretories look ok, and I can access them and thier contents as root.

Re: CDE won't load

For the users affected :

are they able to start a Failsafe session (see options menu front panel) ? If yes sounds like a permissions or networking issue.

Could try adding set -x in .dtprofile : reproduce problem and examine $HOME/.dt/start.log for clues.

As said previously are home dirs nfs mounts ?

could it be something in their .profile ?

run a dr_dt examine output .... ?

Re: CDE won't load

Shalom,

Well it is already networking.

See that the font server is running.

/sbin/init.d/xfs start

Permanent config for start up:
/etc/rc.config.d/xfs
