We still have two questions:
1) We assume the clusters must be halted. Is this correct ?
2) When running the cmapplyconf command with the -C option, will the existing packages still be known to the cluster (without being overwritten) ?

2) No, cmapplyconf -C definitely will not overwrite an existing package configuration when you use it to modify an existing cluster configuration (i.e. the cluster name in the new ASCII configuration file is the same as in the current cluster).
Even if you would lose the package configuration somehow, restoring it would be a simple matter of re-applying all the existing package configuration files with cmapplyconf -P commands.

2. It only affects the cluster configuration. Packages that are already defined are not affected. That is the nice thing about online configuration.
