i have a cable modem and alot of people know my ip adress and i have viruses sent to me alot but i delete them. but i would really like to change my ip adress i really need help

If you have a cable modem, then I assume you have broadband Internet access through some provider. The IP address of the cable modem will more than likely be controlled by your Internet service provider, not you.

I suggest you talk to them about it.

Changing your IP probably won't help you much though. I STRONGLY advise you to look at some sort of firewall. Zone Alarm ( http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp ) is a VERY good one. You also need to invest in some sort of anti-virus software such as Norton Anti-Virus by Symantec ( http://www.symantec.com ). Both of these are ABSOLUTE MUSTS for anyone with broadband Internest access.

To add to Patrick's list, I'd suggest you getting a NEW email account and be careful to only give it to friends!

YOUR IP address is NOT the issue, it's your E-MAIL address!!!

Another thing, USE MOZILLA mail, DO NOT USE ANY MICRO-PUKE$$$ MAIL PROGRAM unless you enjoy virus's!

Third, GET A SYSLINK router, built just for CABLE modems!

Very good point about the e-mail account Harry.

I would do what Harry suggests and get a new e-mail account. I would also get an account from hotmail.com or yahoo.com or someone similar and use it if you register on any sites that require it. You can then access that address from your browser, preferably mozilla or something other than Internet Explorer, and clean it out occasionally.

If you are really concerned about external people/websites not gaining your IP address then I would also suggest connecting to websites via an external proxy server. This will basically make you anonymous.

I've personally found a good combination for firewall is Norton Internet Security AND ZoneAlarm and try to avoid Microspook software as much as possible!
