Changing Window manager

Hi, how do I go about getting rid of CDE (and still being able to patch Xserver) and install a different desktop environment, say gnome or kde for example. (still on hp-ux)

Bill,

You can disable CDE from starting simply by running the following command:

# /usr/dt/bin/dtconfig -d

You can then install an alternate desktop environment, such as GNOME or KDE. Since these do not modify the Xserver, you will still be able to install any and all of the HP-UX X server patches in the future.

I do know that the HP-UX Porting and Archive Center does have a number of the gnome packages ported to HP-UX at http://hpux.cs.utah.edu/hppd/hpux/Gnome/ or you can download the source from http://www.gnome.org/ -- also HP has announced plans that they are migrating the desktop away from CDE to GNOME, but I have not heard any dates as to when a GNOME package will be available. Likewise, you should be able to install KDE from source as well (http://www.kde.org/).

In order to configure the GNOME or KDE window manager to start up, you will need to create an appropriate rc script (see /usr/share/doc/start_up.txt for information on this) to start gdm (for GNOME) or kdm (for KDE).

Just to verify then before I do it, because I don't want any apps not to work because of font problems etc.. All Xserver patches are independant of CDE!

The Window Manager itself dtwm, can be changed seperately, leaving the CDE in place.. this is under some file in /etc/dt/ I believe.
But can't remember which. It's more the window manager that I want to replace more than CDE.

If it doesn't work, I'll post back here.
