Re: Check out Clay Stephenson's bio!

Hi,

I love reading Clay's posts. He is certainly one of the smartest people I've never met before. I keep a local web page on my laptop as the home page for my browser and I keep it updated with all my most popular links. Right next to the HP ITRC forum link I keep a link to my most favorite posting of all time. In this post Clay helped a certain gentleman who was getting some wrong advice from an electrical engineer. It was one of the funniest things I have ever read and I still go to it when I'm having a tough day and I need a good laugh. It is a fine example of the sparks that result from the collision of a person who thinks they are smart [a misguided EE] with a person is truly brilliant [our man Clay].

Clay, thanks for all the great advice and for keeping the rest of us poor souls from straying too far from the path of wisdom. :)

Re: Check out Clay Stephenson's bio!

Hi,

Congratulations Clay!

There are many many postings that I have bookmarked with your signature. Especially the one's on date manipulation.
I too loved that posting about the engineer and followed it closely. It was one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

I hope that you continue to give your advice and knowledge in the forums for a long time. It is very welcome.

Cheers

Re: Check out Clay Stephenson's bio!

Hi Danno,

Yep, I noticed that last Fri - loved it.
I especially agree with his comment RE forumers using real names. I believe, as he does, that it's a very good thing & that it is the main reason we don't have flame wars in here.

Keep up the great work Clay.
We do truly value your input.

Cheers,
Jeff

Re: Check out Clay Stephenson's bio!

Hi Dan,
I've read it too last week and it's definately an excellent idea to put it out so that each of us can express our gratitude to Clay. I've always give myself some time to read any responses he has when I saw them. His contributions are just too many and too good to be missed. So to you Clay .. congratulations and thank you for all the knowledge you're sharing and hope you'll keep on contributing.

Re: Check out Clay Stephenson's bio!

Definitely very nicely done and very interesting.

Dan -- Is there an archive somewhere of the past Bio's that have been done on ITRC / ITRC Forums members? It would be interesting to be able to go back and read some of the old ones.

Re: Check out Clay Stephenson's bio!

Hi Patrick,

The articles are not archived, but I know where to get the 'soft' copy. ;) I'll see what I can do about making them available, perhaps even attaching to a thread somewhere. Good idea...

Thanks,
Dan

hello clay,
good show and keep up the good worl.

and dan, regarding your suggestion of posting the previous bio's to a thread -> i would suggest having it outside the thread, since there is a chance of this thread getting burried.

Hi there.
My special congrats to Clay, whose sense for humor and human dignity is absolutely great.
In one of his postings he mentioned to an outside consultant, that he forgot more about Unix than this man would ever learn.
I hope, we all can learn many more things from you and maybe even sometimes our help may ring a bell for you.
Clay, stay on the way you are just walking.
My kind regards to an excellent member of the forums.

Re: Check out Clay Stephenson's bio!

Per ardua ad astra

Clay here's a present for you in appreciation of your input..

CONDITIONS
Flat 2-D universe

THE PROBLEM
1] Consider the infinte set of triangles that have all three sides of unit length
[such as the trivial right-angled example 3,4,5]

2] Make an infinite list with 3 columns
Column 1: Side lengths
Column 2: Area
Column 3: Length of boundary
[eg :3,4,5:6:12:]

3] Sort the list by
Column 2 smallest first
within that..
Column 3 smallest first
within that..
Column 1 lowest number first
[eg if 3,12,14 & 3,13,13 had equal aeas, then 3,12,14 is listed before 3,13,13]

4] Delete all members of the list that DON'T have an exact unit area

THE QUESTIONS
What's the first member of the list?
What's the first member with area 2?
With Area 3?
Is it possible to prove that there are an an infinite number of members that have area 1?

MY COMMENTS
I thought it up months ago
I can't find an elegant way to tackle it
I wonder if it's another one of those 4-colour style problems where only a computer can crunch it

Please apply your fine mind to it if you think it's interesting enough !!

Kind regards
Mike

Re: Check out Clay Stephenson's bio!

Thanks for pointing this out Dan. I'd already read it but it's nice to get the word out to others.

I'm proud to say that I had the opportunity to buy Clay an adult beverage of his choice at HP World in LA last year (a martini, I think? - I saved the receipt somewhere - I should have had him sign it so I could frame it and hang it on my wall). Take it from me, his genius and his sense of humor are absolutley genuine. He's the same in real life as he sounds in all his fascinating posts.

Humbled,
Pete

Re: Check out Clay Stephenson's bio!

Hi all:

Congrats, again, Clay!

I'm amazed at the knowledge and ability that Clay, and many others in this forum offer. Computers can be very challenging. The people that I work with think that I???m brilliant, but I feel dwarfed by people like Clay. I???ve been doing IT for 17 years and I???m still learning tons. I peruse the ITRC forums more to learn from the experts like Clay. So please, Clay, keep that knowledge flowing!

Many Thanks,

Tom Jackson

Re: Check out Clay Stephenson's bio!

Clay:

I have been familiar with your name for a long time now and noted the "user status" icons in the margins and how yours was always the highest. Seems like ITRC royalty was about it for the longest time. And I distinctly remember your icon as royalty for a long time and remember thinking something like, "...well that should be just about it..., he can't get much more than that...".

Then one day I was flabbergasted when it showed as ITRC Olympian.

Gag...??XX!!. Just how do you get all of those points anyway sir? Hack in or something? :-)

And I also remember the PDP 11 with its 8 bit word size and actually ran into one at a hospital circa 1998. It was still being used with some medical equipment. Unbelievable what some accountants and doctors will hold onto.

Re: Check out Clay Stephenson's bio!

Frederick,

I can assure you that there is no hacking done on the part of Clay for the points that you see in his profile. The man just appears to be that good and it has earned him the respect of his peers. He keeps winning new members to his fan club on a regular basis (pretty much daily from what I can tell) when he goes out and offers one of the newcomers to the forum a piece of his vast knowledge. That knowledge, along with the unique style with which he delivers it, seems to get them every time.

Clay,

I don???t have the pleasure of being able to say that I know you personally but, like you, I am seeing this ???sense of community??? that you mentioned and this leaves me with some hope that I may someday get the chance to. I can???t help but wonder what it would be like to sit down over a cup of coffee (or other various beverages :) and just talk about ???stuff???. If I could manage to get you on a philosophical roll, I bet it could go on for hours. Just a guess on my part. I could be wrong???

Thanks for the help you have freely given others and myself in this forum. Hope you are always willing to keep it up. This place just wouldn???t be the same without you.
