CIFS and windows : owner and group problem

I installed the cifs client and share windows folder with UNIX. Assumping that copy a files from windows folder to unix, the files owner and group always "root:sys" . How to keep the original owner and group?

Re: CIFS and windows : owner and group problem

You have encountered a fundamental incompatability between Windows and Unix. Windows has not concept of Unix UID or GIDs. The only way--with current technology--to preserve Unix UIDs and GIDs within the CIFS protocol, is to use CIFS clients and servers that have implementations of the CIFS Unix Extensions. This includes, for example, for the client, the HP CIFS Client, and CIFS-VFS (which runs on Linux); and for the server, the HP CIFS Server (runs on HP-UX) and other recent versions of Samba.

There is a brief description of the CIFS Unix Extensions in the HP CIFS Client Admin Guide, available at docs.hp.com.

If I have misunderstood your post, please post a reply.

Re: CIFS and windows : owner and group problem

I keep the same users and groups on both Unix and Microsoft.

My system is manual and does not use a Windows Domain Controller.

You can also with CIFS 3.x and up do one of the following:

ADS Windows Active Directory Service (samba 3 only)
LDAP Authentication
Samba/CIFS as Primary Domain controller.

Any of the last three options will if implemented correctly solve the issue you bring once and for all.
