CIFS - filedate changes on viewing a file

I use CIFS-Client (A.02.02.02, 11i or 11iv3) to mount a share from an Novell OES 2 server.

If I view a file (size >0 byte) on this share (i.e. with cat, more etc.) the filedate changes to the time of viewing.

Does anyone know how to avoid that?

This behaviour does not appear on an Windows XP share, but also doesn't if I mount the OES-Share on a Linux-client.

So I don't know if the Server (Novell OES2) or the HP-UX CIFS-Client causes this problem.

Is it set up to display the access time instead of the modification time?
You may have to ask in a Novell forum?

It's the file modification time that changes.
The access time is different to it.
