cluster filesystem on HP-UX 11i v1
i am looking for cluster filesystem for my HP-UX 11i v1
I was talking to Veritas sales person and it was very expensive.
Does anyone knows of other solution for this cluster file system. I intend to use this filesystem on 4 nodes. Just to allow all nodes to see and R/W to the same location with out using NFS. I've have many performance problem with NFS.
Your advice is appreciated.
Regards,
Tom

Re: cluster filesystem on HP-UX 11i v1
HP's LVM does not have a cluster file system in the sense of Veritas Cluster FS. Oracle, as mentioned in the above post has its own clustering FS but anectodal evidence from what I have heard, it is not a very good implementation of the idea. Yes I know it is an expensive solution to buy it from Veritas but any project that is concerned enough to use clusters and parallel processing, should be able to afford spending this money to be on the solid ground. By the way, I am sure Oracle's clustering FS is not free or anything close to that.

Re: cluster filesystem on HP-UX 11i v1
Earlier, HP wanted to move some of the good features of Tru64 Unix and OpenVMS to HPUX and porting CFS/AdvFS was on of them. But they later dropped plans about CFS/AdvFS porting and supported Veritas CFS integrated wth MC/SG instead.

http://h21007.www2.hp.com/dspp/files/unprotected/hpux/transition_techskilles_tru64_hpux.pdf
For me, it is bad news that Tru64 Unix is going to end. I think Tru64 Unix is much more rich and superior than current 11.23. It would be nice to have goddies of it in HPUX. Let's see maybe we would see in near future.

Re: cluster filesystem on HP-UX 11i v1
Veritas has such a thing.
vxfs actually works very well with shared storage.
If you are having peformance problems with NFS make sure you have the latest patch sets installed, it can make all the difference in the world and is a lot less expensive than a new filesystem.

Re: cluster filesystem on HP-UX 11i v1
questions:
for HPUX 11i v3
CFS is an add on product
and this one will turn a bit to perfomance on NFS
for 11i v1
the pct_max and pct_min are 10 and 5
on 16Gb RAM = max 1.6Gb and min 800Mb
is it too much for 11i v1
hp support recommend 5 and 2
max 800Mb min 320 Mb

Tom

Re: cluster filesystem on HP-UX 11i v1
And yes - it is only for Veritas Volume Manager - not LVM.

Re: cluster filesystem on HP-UX 11i v1
it better to use VxFs file system for 4 nodes only. earliear its known as JFS.
i think it will serve your purpose

Re: cluster filesystem on HP-UX 11i v1
for HPUX 11i v1 the cluster files system
i think is out of the question.
i would need to upgrade to 11i v2 to be able to ustilize the service guard 11.17 suite ( that include veritas CFS)
so my choice isn't much for 11i v1.

Tom
