cluster setup using LVM and VxVM

Hi,

I am planning to implement a two node failover cluster having one failover package.
These two nodes are attached to an EVA6000 disk array.
I also need to implement a cluster lock.

I need some help regarding the following:-
1. How can I design the root disks and mirror on each node. Should I use LVM or VXVM
2. Where and how can I implement the cluster lock disk, on the disk array or on the nodes,
as I also cannot use VxVM because it does not support a cluster lock.
3. Should I use LVM or VxVM for the cluster package disks?

Re: cluster setup using LVM and VxVM

Priotosh,
You can use LVM and Mirrordisk/UX for the root disks and mirror. Base VxVM doesnot have the mirroring feature. LVM can be used for the cluster lock disk and for the package disk as well.

To add to my previous reply,
The lock disk needs to be configured on EVA so that it will be shared by both the nodes.

Shalom,

I prefer LVM. Both are supported however. Whichever you are more comfortable with.

2. Where and how can I implement the cluster lock disk, on the disk array or on the nodes,
as I also cannot use VxVM because it does not support a cluster lock.

Lock disk must be accessible to both machines. Shared storage, fiber or scsi will work.

3. Should I use LVM or VxVM for the cluster package disks?

Whichever you are more comfortable with. There are more people in ITRC that know LVM.

Re: cluster setup using LVM and VxVM

Hi Patrick,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have separately purchased VxVM and want to implement VxVM also as I want to backup the volumes online which is faster than using LVM.

So kindly suggest me where I can use LVM and where I can implement VxVM as I want to implement both. Is this scenario possible?

Re: cluster setup using LVM and VxVM

Hi Patrick,

Can LVM and VxVM coexist in a two node failover cluster scenario?

Re: cluster setup using LVM and VxVM

Hi Priotosh,

1.Use LVM with mirrordisk/UX for root mirroring.
2.Clusterlock should be shared between all the nodes in cluster. So make small vdisk and present to both nodes as clusterlock.

3.Cluster lock has to be configured with LVM.Make a vg using cluster lock vdisk on both nodes.

cheers!!

Re: cluster setup using LVM and VxVM

Priotosh,

I would recommend LVM because VxVm cannnot be used for cluster lock disk. Also the package startup time will be more when using VxVM.

Re: cluster setup using LVM and VxVM

BPatrick:
Base VxVM has the mirroring feature for the boot disk only.
It can be used for configuring boot disk.

Priotosh:
LVM and VxVM can coexist in a two node cluster.
If you want to use LVM for boot and VxVM for data,
you need to use VxVM 4.1.

Re: cluster setup using LVM and VxVM

Priotosh,

If you want to use both LVM and VxVM, use LVM for the cluster lock and the root disks and VxVm for your data.

Re: cluster setup using LVM and VxVM

Hi Zygmunt,

So I assume that if I use VxVM 4.1 I can do the following:-

1.I can use LVM for root disks and mirror configured on each node,
2.I can configure a cluster lock disk on EVA6K with LVM.
3.I can configure a failover package disk on both nodes with LVM and
4.I can configure Oracle/data disks on EVA6k with VxVM.

Am I right?

Priotosh,
Thats the best thing you could do.

Re: cluster setup using LVM and VxVM

Hi Priotosh,

If you use VxVM 4.1 you can:

1. Use VxVM for root disks and mirror configured on each node,
2. Configure a cluster lock disk on EVA6k with LVM (LVM is required for lock disk)
3. Configure a failover package disk on each nodes with VxVM
4. Configure Oracle/data disks on EVA6k with VxVM

Re: cluster setup using LVM and VxVM

Hi Zygmunt,

I have a little doubt on point 1 and point 3 what you have mentioned.
Can I configure failover package using VxVM?
as I was planning to use LVM for root disks and mirror on nodes and LVM for failover package disk on each node.
Now if I use LVM for root disks, would it be a problem when I install VxVM. Would VxVM initialize the root disk?

Priotosh

Re: cluster setup using LVM and VxVM

Hi Priotosh,

If you use LVM for root disks, you can still use VxVM for Oracle/data disks.
LVM and VxVM can coexist.
